  2. 0 -.5 +.5 -1.0 +1.0 Low High Outline of presentation What is arousal? How does the arousal meter work? Out on a limb - close the loop Current and ongoing efforts

  3. What is arousal? Performance Arousal Level • Yerkes & Dodson (1908) • easy vs. difficult tasks • affects “sustained attention” and short term memory

  4. 0 -.5 +.5 -1.0 +1.0 Low High How does it work? Display Monitor Analyze

  5. 0 -.5 +.5 Feedback -1.0 +1.0 Low High Close the loop Display Monitor Analyze

  6. Out on a limb... Are we actually measuring arousal?

  7. Measuring arousal • Sympathetic nervous system - “fight or flight” • (epinephrine and catecholamine) • Parasympathetic nervous system - return to rest • (norepinephrine and acetocholine) • Respiratory sinus arrhythmia - indicator of PNS activity • Autonomic, electrocortical, and behavioral arousal

  8. Out on a limb... Are we actually measuring arousal? Yes, at least partially.

  9. Out on a limb... Is physiological arousal correlated to cognitive workload?

  10. Is physiological arousal related to cognitive workload? Rest vs. Hand grip Physiological tasks Cognitive tasks (three levels of difficulty)

  11. Arousal during physiological tasks

  12. Arousal during cognitive tasks

  13. Out on a limb... Is physiological arousal related to cognitive workload? Based on pilot study, yes. (More data needed.)

  14. Out on a limb... How should arousal drive the feedback loop?

  15. Home-brewed system Manipulate game operation based upon arousal

  16. Out on a limb... How should arousal drive the feedback loop? Try and see.

  17. Closed-loop study Assistance off - person pushes button to recharge Assistance on - computer recharges when <= 50% Manual - person turns assistance on/off when desired Automatic - arousal level turns assistance on/off Yoked - on/off tied to arousal of previous subject 60 subjects, balanced by gaming experience and gender

  18. Performance vs. control Deeper analysis in progress

  19. 0 -.5 +.5 -1.0 +1.0 Low High What are we doing now? Measurement - additional physiological measures Analysis - wavelets Hardware - wearable arousal meter Cognitive correlation - sleep study Closed loop performance - rebalance, try again
