Egypt Air – The Story So Far Egypt Air – The History Behind One of the world’s pioneer airlines - EgyptAir is based out of the cosmopolitan city of Cairo, the capital city of Egypt. It commenced operations on May 7th, 1932 and it is the first airline in the Middle East and Africa and the seventh airline in the world to join IATA as a treasured brand. Within no time, it won huge applause for its commendable service to its customers and became the seventh carrier in the world. The Egyptian government took over the airline during the Second World War and changed its name to Misr Airlines. Later, Misr Airlines was changed to MisrAir and 10 Beechcraft were purchased adding American technology to the fleet. MisrAir joined hands with Syrian Airlines forming a new identity "United Arab Airlines-UAA". However, UAA became the first airline in the Middle East to fly Boeing 707s. But, later MisrAir and Syrian Airlines split which resulted in the new identity "EGYPTAIR". In 2002, the EGYPTAIR became a Holding Company with nine subsidiaries.
