  2. Where did it come from? • Found roots in Christianity and Judaism • Muhammad brought ideas together • Founded in modern day Saudi Arabia • Believe in Moses, Jesus and Abraham as prophets • Find basis in Old Testament: known as the Quran

  3. Who is Muhammad? • Trader in and around Mecca • Didn’t like immorality and idol worship • Very wealthy. Married woman 15 years older than him. • 610 received revelation • 613 begins preaching • Most wealthy and religious leaders didn’t like him; 622 leaves Mecca for Yathrib. • Begins Muslim calendar. • Seen as final prophet in Islam • NOT founder of Islam. Brought everything together.

  4. QURAN • Holy Scripture given to Muhammad by Angel Gabriel over 22 years. • Stories similar to Bible of Christians and Torah of Jews • Means “recital” in Arabic

  5. BASIC BELIEFS • Values • Written in Quran • Kindness, honor parents, protect orphans and widows, give to poor, etc. • Forbids murder, lying, gambling, pork and alcohol • Law not separate from religion • No ranked order of clergy

  9. ALMSGIVING • GIVING OF CHARITY • REFLECTS IDEA OF WEALTHY HELPING POOR • PRIVATE AND PUBLIC • ALL MUSLIMS PAY “ZAKAT” OR PURIFICATION TAX ON PROPERTY TO BENEFIT POOR • ZAKAT IS FIXED ABOUT 2 ½ % OF ONES INCOME • HELPS KIN, THE NEEDY AND WAYFARER

  10. FASTING • OCCURS DURING MONTH OF RAMADAN • CONSIDERED MONTH WHEN MUHAMMAD RECEIVED HIS REVELATION • DON’T EAT OR DRINK FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET • EACH DAY ENDS AT SUNSET WITH CALL FOR PRAYER • END OF RAMADAN HAS THREE DAY CELEBRATION

  11. HAJJ • PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA • EACH PERSON SHOULD MAKE TREK AT LEAST ONCE IN LIFETIME IF OF SOUND BODY AND FINANCIALLY ABLE TO MAKE TREK • HAPPENS 2 MONTHS 10 DAYS AFTER RAMADAN • CONSIST OF 3 DAY CEREMONY, PRAYER AND SACRIFICE
