2. Hylidae • Most species are arboreal and have toe pads. • Diverse reproductive specializations. • Very diverse lifestyles.

3. Acris crepitans(Northern Cricket Grog) • Have moist warty skin with long legs, webs between toes. • Dark triangle between the eyes • Median stripe of Y-figure on back which can be green, russet, yellow, brown, gray. • Pair of prominent subanal white tubercles. • Found in the piedmont, margins of ponds, ditches, marshes.

6. Hyla versicolor(Gray Treefrog) • 1.25 – 2.5” long. • Gray, well-camouflaged frog. • Dark irregular markings on upper eyelid, legs. • Whitish mark under the eye, bright orange on concealed surfaces of hind legs. • A ‘sibling’ species is identical in appearance. • Commonly found throughout SC.

8. Hyla cinereaGreen Treefrog • Green slender treefrog 1.25 – 2.5” long. • Has long legs, smooth skin , plain white venter. • Prominent light stripe on side of body, tiny golden spots on dorsum. • Reside along swampy edges of ponds, lakes, marshes, streams.

Hyla gratiosaBarking Treefrog • Large stout frog 2 – 2.75” long. • Green to brown color with spots on back. • Reside in sandy areas near shallow ponds and in low wet woods and swamps in coastal ponds. • White stripe along sides of body and legs. • Call is a barking sound. • Skin not as smooth as H. cinerea.

Pseudacris crucifer(Spring Peeper) • Smallish frog 0.75 – 1.5” long. • Harbinger of spring, has tan, brown, or gray dorsum. • Prominent dark X marking on back. • Dark barlike marking between eyes. • Venter is buff, cream colored, sometimes spots. • Breeds around woodland ponds, swamps, ditches.

Pseudacris triseriataUpland Chorus Frog • Small frog up to 1.5” long. • Brown/gray dorsum with 3 stripes down back. • Stripe extends from snouth through eye to groin. • Dark marking between eyes, light mark lines upper lip. • Toes have small pads with little or no webbing. • Occurs widely through piedmont in grassy areas around ponds, ditches.

16. Ranidae • Often called the ‘true frogs’. • ….which makes no sense! • Found on almost every continent. • Most produce tadpole. Conraua goliath and baby deer

17. Rana catesbeiana(Bullfrog) • Our largest frog, 3.5 – 8” long. • Dorsum is olive, brown, gray with large blotches and often small bloack dots. • Venter is buffy white with dark mottling. • Lack dorsolateral fold but have fold along tympanum. • Reside in large ponds, lakes, streams.

Rana clamitans(Green Frog) • Large frog 2 – 3.5” long. • Similar to bullfrog but dorsolateral folds extend part way down back. • Green or brown dorsum with some dark spots. • Dark markings often on light venter. • Characteristic ‘squeak’ as frog jumps. • Reside along streams, ponds, lakes throughout SC.

22. Rana utricularia(Southern Leopard Frog) • Very active frogs 2 – 3.5” long. • Dorsum is green or brown with large rounded dark spots. • White venter. • Dorsolateral folds extend full length of body. • Light spot in center of tympanum. • Inhabit ponds, ditches, swamps, streams throughout SC.
