Listening “The process of receiving, attending to, and assigning meaning to aural and visual stimuli.” Listening by Wolvin and Coakley College students spend 55% of their communication time listening.
Phases of Listening • Attending • Understanding • Remembering
Phase 1 -- Attending In the classroom there are many distractions • a good listener focuses on the professor’s words • a poor listener has a hard time blocking out the external noises
Techniques for attending to a lecture: • Eliminate physical distractions • Prepare to listen • Don’t tune out if the professor says something you disagree with • Adjust to the listening goals of the situation
Phase 2 -- Understanding We must actively listen by assigning meaning to what is being said. • a good listener applies active listening • a poor listener only hears what is said
Techniques for understanding a lecture: • Seek out the instructor’s method of organization • Stay focused on the lecture by: • asking mental questions to anticipate information • paraphrasing or reviewing (silently) • Watch for nonverbal cues
Phase 3 -- Remembering Use techniques to imprint ideas on your memory. • good listener employs help to retain information • a poor listener interprets information accurately and understands it, but forgets it

Techniques for Taking Notes • Preparation • Note Taking • Finalizing A 3-Step Process:
Preparation • Read the text & note any questions • Use a 3-ring binder • Head each lecture • Choose a note taking style • Use margins for questions and summary • Write on one side of the paper only • Number your pages
Taking Notes • Write clearly • Start taking notes immediately • Use abbreviations and symbols for technical words • Listen for an overview of topics • Listen for cues (may show up on next test) • Note important examples • Copy notes written on the board • Listen for the last minute cram of information towards the end of class
Finalizing Review your lecture notes ASAP Fill in blank spaces, using your text or a friend’s notes Write questions about notes in the left hand margin Write a summary of the notes Visit your instructor for clarification
It is important that you read the textbook • additional information not covered in class • clarifies information presented in class • provides additional examples of concepts
Get the most out of your texts! Use the SQ3R Method
SQ3R • Survey • Question • Read • Recite • Review
Step 1 = Survey • check the length of the reading • read title and headings • examine pictures, graphs, and illustrations • find the names of people • look at the italicized or bold words • read the review questions
Step 2 = Question ? • turn the headings into questions • read the section to find the answer
Step 3 = Read • read paragraph by paragraph • reading aloud often helps with remembering • highlight or underline main ideas • look up difficult or new words • break every 20 minutes
Step 4 = Recite • answer aloud the questions you wrote • reword each paragraph aloud • promotes concentration • checks your comprehension • helps you remember
Step 5 = Review • step back and review the whole chapter • look at questions and review the answers • keep it short

Mark Your Books! • read the whole paragraph - then mark it • be selective • write in the margins • keep your book neat • use cross-references • be systematic
