The purpose of this project: • To learn what you would need to know in an entry college level fine arts class. • How do you achieve good composition? • How do you create strong contrast?
Composition Basics • stage the scene (You are the director) • grab a camera and take 10-12 digital photos • lighting for strong shadows and highlights • use a backdrop to simplify space (optional). • work with a partner for another point of view • try different and unexpected angles and perspectives
Contrast Basics • What is contrast? Five points of light… Extremes of light and dark values that create shapes and patterns in your composition. • Turn off the flash, turn up the spotlights • What happens if you add brightly colored draped fabric?
Composition Theory • upload your photos • study the Masters • “something short, something tall, something big, something small, something running off the edge. • off center focal point • Golden Mean • Rule of Thirds • Balancesymmetrical/asymmetrical
Next: Editing in PhotoShop • crop for composition • resize (image-image size 8x10”) • view fit on screen • image-adjustments (levels, shadows & highlights, exposure) • simplify background
Choices: • oils • acrylics • colored pencil • watercolor
