EMOTIONS Reviewed by: Richard S. Kingsley, MDDate reviewed: December 2004 According to kidshealth.org “Why Talk About Your Feelings? The way a personfeels inside is important. It can be really hard not to tell anyone that you're feeling sad, worried, or upset. Then, it's just you and these bad feelings. If you keep feelings locked inside, it can even make you feel sick! But if you talk with someone who cares for you, like your mom or dad, you will almost always start to feel better. Now you're not all alone with your problems or worries. It doesn't mean your problems and worries disappear magically, but at least someone else knows what's bothering you and can help you find solutions. Your mom and dad want to know if you have problems because they love you and they want to know what's happening in your life. But what if a kid doesn't want to talk with mom or dad? Then find another trusted adult, like a relative or a counselor at school. Maybe this person can help you talk with your mom and dad about your problem or concern.” As you can see emotions are a way to connect to other people that feel the same way. In the Giver they don’t have real emotions they know what they are but they are expressing what they were taught to think emotions are.
EUTHENASIA • People who support euthanasia often say that it is already considered permissable to take human life under some circumstances such as self defense - but they miss the point that when one kills for self defense they are saving innocent life - either their own or someone else's. With euthanasia no one's life is being saved - life is only taken. • History has taught us the dangers of euthanasia and that is why there are only two countries in the world today where it is legal. That is why almost all societies - even non-religious ones - for thousands of years have made euthanasia a crime. It is remarkable that euthanasia advocates today think they know better than the billions of people throughout history who have outlawed euthanasia - what makes the 50 year old euthanasia supporters in 2005 so wise that they think they can discard the accumulated wisdom of almost all societies of all time and open the door to the killing of innocent people? Have things changed? If they have, they are changes that should logically reduce the call for euthanasia - pain control medicines and procedure are far better than they have ever been any time in history. • As you can see euthanasia is a way of killing and is often confused with the death penalty. In The Giver they use euthanasia as a way to control and get rid of people. BYE-BYE!!
Animals • According to Adam Kuhn of http://www.animaltalk.net/about.htm • “It is proven that having a dog lowers high blood pressure, reduces anxiety and stress, and improves a person's general health is that humans and dogs have evolved together. If you're looking for a stress management technique, if you're looking to reduce blood pressure of find stress relief, you would be hard-pressed to find a more enjoyable solution than getting a dog.” As you can see having animals help people and isn't always bad for people. Animals may be harmful but also help in different ways. In TheGiver they don’t have animals so they don’t infect or hurt anyone.
Remember, that even if our community isn’t perfect, it’s better to have both the good and the bad, rather than to eliminate the bad and good together. For example, in the Giver community, there are no emotions because if there were love, people could be heartbroken and mad.
