HOW MUCH HOMEWORK IS ENOUGH?
SUCCESS • Depends on establishing effective patterns • Rarely does a late last minute big effort produce results in either homework or study • Consistency and regularity.
ONLY SO MUCH TIME • Family • Relationships • Sport • Jobs • Friends
Patterns involving these factors already exist when students start Year 11 • To succeed students need to break those patterns to find the time they need.
The pattern of application needs to be set early • The mind and body both get used to the expectation of homework and study • Students need time to work out what works best for them particularly with study.
HOMEWORK AND STUDY • Are different things • Different focus at different times.
HOMEWORK - Teacher directed - Assessment tasks - Follow up from class work - Research/ reading prior to class work
STUDY • is generally student directed although teachers often give guidance about what and how to study • Is a constant process of revision but is more concentrated near major exam times when less homework is given. • If students are used to doing homework then that time can be transferred to study as required
HOW MUCH TIME? • Different patterns of study demand different efforts • Even less demanding patterns need 10 hours a week at least • More demanding patterns 20 hours or more a week.
That last slide was serious………………..if your son or daughter isn’t working consistently they are unlikely to achieve their best and • Unlikely to change when the reach Year 12.
GENERAL GUIDELINES • Spot they can be uninterrupted • Music works for some but not all students • An hour without a break is generally as long as students can focus • Short breaks can revitalize as can changing topics eg English to Maths.
VISUAL CUES • Most of our students are strong visually so use the strength • Formulas , quotes, key words should be up in prominent positions. • Repetition helps get things into long term memory which is crucial
STUDY IS NOT THE SAME FOR EVERYONE • Students need to find what works best • ‘reading over’ is generally the least effective • Teaching someone else is generally the most effective
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING • THE STATEMENT “ I HAVE NO HOMEWORK” IS NEVER TRUE
