Fruits • Serving size depends on age, gender, and level of activity. • Boys ages 9-13 = 1 ½ cups of fruit per day • Girls ages 9-13 = 1 ½ cups of fruit per day • What is a cup of fruit equal to? • 1 small apple • 1 large banana • 32 grapes • Serving Size Fruit Chart
Vegetables • Serving Size • Girls ages 9-13 should have 2 cups per serving • Boys ages 9-13 should have 2 ½ cups per serving • What is 1cup of vegetables? • Dark green vegetables(Broccoli, spinach)= 1 cup chopped, or 2 cups raw • Carrots= 2 medium sized • Tomato= 1 large raw
Grains • Includes pasta, rice, bread, pretzels, tortillas, corn flakes, and popcorn. • Serving size • Girls 9-13 years of age- 5oz • Boys 9-13 years of age- 6oz • How much is 1oz? • Bagels- 1 Mini Bagel • Bread- 1 slice • Popcorn- 3cups popped • Rice- ½ cup cooked
Protein Foods • Meats, Fish, Chicken, Eggs, Peanuts, and Seeds. • Boys and Girls ages 9-13= 5oz per day. • What is 1oz of protein? • Meats- 1 small steak or lean hamburger • Seafood- 1 can of tuna • Eggs- 1 egg • Nuts & Seeds- ½ cup
Dairy • Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese • Boys and Girls ages 9-13 = 3 cups per day • What is 1 cup of dairy? • Milk- 1 cup • Yogurt- 1 regular size container • Cheese • 2oz of American (2 slices) • 2 cups of cottage cheese • 1/3 cup of shredded cheese
