  1. Introduction to Sensors and Calibration Factors

  2. Choosing a suitable recording range on a data logger Logger will have several range options: e.g. -10 to +10 mV, -100 to +100 mV, -1000 to +1000 mV To choose the optimum range…Step 1: Estimate the expected max and min values of the variable being measured.Step 2: Obtain the calibration factor of the sensor (e.g. 10 mV / degree C for a temperature sensor)Step 3: Estimate the max and min signals expected by multiplying info from Step 1 by info from Step 2.Step 4: Choose range to get best precision without over-ranging. Which of the above range options would you choose for a temperature sensor with cal factor of 1mv / degree C?

  3. Let’s work out best logger ranges for sensors you will be using. Temperature1. Max and min values?2. Calibration factor?3. Max and min signals?4. Best range? Relative Humidity1. Max and min values?2. Calibration factor?3. Max and min signals?4. Best range?

  4. Wind Speed1. Max and min values?2. Calibration factor?3. Max and min signals?4. Best range? Wind Direction1. Max and min values?2. Calibration factor?3. Max and min signals?4. Best range?

  5. Solar Radiation1. Max and min values? 0 to 1200 W/m22. Calibration factor?3. Max and min signals?4. Best range? Net Radiation1. Max and min values? -100 to +1000 W/m22. Calibration factor?3. Max and min signals?4. Best range?

  6. Soil Temperature (thermocouple or thermistor)1. Max and min values?2. Calibration factor3. Max and min signals?4. Best range? Precipitation1. Max and min values? - not required. Sends pulse data.2. Calibration factor? 3. Max and min signals? - 0 or accumulated counts. 4. Best range? Use a pulse channel on logger.
