Although some scholarships are not based on academic achievement, do your best to excel in the classroom Do more than what your major requires, be involved Contact the Office of Campus Activities for ideas Community service activities: do them, they’re fun! Get involved in extracurricular activities and clubs Looks great on a resume Scholarship To Do’s
Do the essay! It’s worth it (possibly required)! Check the guidelines for the essay; oftentimes, the selection committee is trying to get a feel for who you are, your family circumstance, your future plans and goals Keep a copy of every scholarship application you submit; you might be able to re-use the application information or the essay Apply! Do NOT pay for a scholarship search. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Ask the Student Financial Aid Office about legitimate opportunities/questionable solicitations. That’s part of our job. Scholarship search companies (who charge a fee) guarantee they’ll find you financial aid; what they don’t tell you is it’s in the form of loans every student is eligible for Scholarship Don’ts
Scholarships are updated in late fall/early spring online for the coming academic year. Most have deadlines dates with some beginning January 1st. Find a scholarship…contact your college office for application and deadline dates. When do I begin my search?

Look for trade-centered organizations: many offer educational incentives for students VCT majors: look in advertising, marketing, theatre, film trade groups Technology education majors: look in groups that provide textbooks/supplies to your demographic Construction education majors: look up equipment manufacturers/servicers, trade groups Look for state, regional (midwest/great lakes), and national organizations that pertain to your major Scholarship Sources (cont…)
