Renewable energy potentials in North Sweden Joakim Lundgren, Ph.D Ass. Professor Division of Energy Engineering Luleå University of Technology
Energy demand scenarios for Norrbotten until 2025 Total energy demand 2025: 40-70 TWh per year
Potential renewable fuel and energy resources (incl. current supply) Total theoretical energy supply potential 2025: 48-61 TWh per year
Motor fuel production potential vs demand Demand scenarios
Selection of new plants (Pilot, Demonstration, Commercial) Biogas from sewage sludge and food waste Biomass and solar based district heating Biogas from offal and manure Production of pine diesel 100 000 m3 per year 1101 wind mills 4000 MWel = 8-12 TWh annually Motor fuel production via gasification of solid biomass and black liquor
Possible barriers • In low populated areas, small-scale solutions are often the most feasible • Economy • Large specific investments • Low energy prices • Relatively poor subsidies • Lack of entrepreneurs • Politics –”The Luleå-Boden heating situation”
Summary • The current energy situation is to a large extent the result of descisions taken 20-40 years ago. So will the the future energy supply, but that can still be formed. • How and how fast a new sustainable energy system can be obtained is a matter of the choices and the descisions that we take today and the coming years. • Many arctic regions have great potential to develop a sustainable regional energy supply – low population, rich on renewable assets - can serve as a role model for other regions and to be ashow window for the demonstration of new energy technologies.
