  2. 6 EASILY DETECTABLE AND TREATABLE CANCERS Cancer is the fourth common cause of death in India and rapidly moving upwards. The key to the cure is early diagnosis which is possible in many cancers. Lets’ have look at cancers which can be easily diagnosed with simple tests :- • Cervical cancers: This is one of the common cancers detected in women which can be easily diagnosed with simple tests. Every women above 30 yrs should undergo a PAP Smear test every 3yrs, which can detect presence of cancerous or abnormal cells. This is also a preventable cancer with availability of cervical cancer vaccine which if given in girls above 10 yrs of age can decrease the risk of cancer. WWW.JIYYO.COM

Regular self examination of the breast ( once a month ) along with mammogram once every three years in women above 40 yrs of age can help in early diagnosis of this cancer. Treatment at early stage leads to complete cure from this deadly disease. Endometrial cancer: Abnormal menstrual bleeding patterns or bleeding in postmenopausal women should never be ignored. Stool for occult blood is the most simple test to screen patients with this cancer. People with high risk like those having ulcerative colitis , polyps or family history of colorectal cancer must undergo colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy as advised by the gastroenterologist. Prostate cancer: Prostate cancer can be diagnosed with a simple blood test called PSA and digital rectal examination by a surgeon . Men having difficulty in passing urine should get themselves checked by a surgeon. Prostate cancer in early stages is completely curable. All men with high risk ( family history of prostate cancer below 65 years of age, ) of developing this cancer should undergo regular screening tests after 45yrs of age. • WWW.JIYYO.COM

Any swelling or lump anywhere in the body which is painless and slowly increasing in size can also be the sign of cancer. Cancer cases are rapidly rising and posing as a big burden both emotionally and financially. The need of the hour is rapid and early diagnoses which can lead to permanent cure in most of the patients.
