Refined oils also called vegetable oils like soybean, safflower, cottonseed, rice bran, canola oil, sunflower oil, ground nut oil are essential part of our kitchen. They are commonly used for frying and cooking. We daily come across various advertisements regarding different types of refined oils available and their benefits but the reality is something else. Earlier it was told that desighee and butter are bad for our health and refined oils are much better but now studies have shown that refined oils are really bad for you.

  2. REFINED OILS ARE BAD FOR YOU Refined oils also called vegetable oils like soybean, safflower, cottonseed, rice bran, canola oil, sunflower oil, ground nut oil are essential part of our kitchen. They are commonly used for frying and cooking. We daily come across various advertisements regarding different types of refined oils available and their benefits but the reality is something else. Earlier it was told that desighee and butter are bad for our health and refined oils are much better but now studies have shown that refined oils are really bad for you. What are refined oils? The natural oils from plants and vegetables are processed by mechanical and chemical methods in such way so that they become edible, odourless, lighter and have a longer shelf life. In this processing of making them refined these oils undergo bleaching, steam distillation ,hydrogenations etc. which not only decreases their nutritive value but also make them harmful. Exposure to high temperatures, pressures followed by chemical processing to extract oil oxidizes them. So when consumed this oxidation process damage cells in various parts of our body causing heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Also a process known as hydrogenation damages the fatty acids in this oils and makes trans fats. Trans fats are really bad our health and triggers deadly diseases like cancers. Heating an oil also changes its characteristics . The oil which was healthier at room temperature becomes harmful at high temperatures. Also these refined oils are used for frying and heated repeatedly which oxidizes them even more and thus more deadlier. The samosas and pakoras are fried in the oil which has been heated multiple times thus making them unhealthy. WWW.JIYYO.COM

Shift to healthier alternatives: Instead of refined oils consume natural oils like mustard oil( mustard oil is different from sunflower oil ), coconut oil, olive oil. These oils do not undergo processing like the refined oils and thus safe even at high temperatures. If you have to fry in refined oil, use that oil only once and discard it after that. Use butter or desi ghee: Once considered harmful and pro atherosclerosis, these oils are much safer than refined oils if consumed within limits.
