DLNA Technology OverviewDigital Living Network Alliance® [Alternative Director/Hiroyuki Suzuki] [14-July-2010]
DLNA: Interoperability at All Layers DTCP/IP (mandatory) WMDRM-ND (optional) How commercial content is protected on the Home Network Link Protection MPEG2, MPEG4, AVC/H.264, LPCM, MP3, AAC LC, JPEG, XHTML-Print+ optional formats How media content is encoded and identified for interoperability Media Formats HTTP (mandatory) RTP (optional)Quality of Service Media Transport How media content is transferred UPnP AV 1.0UPnP Print Enhanced 1.0 How media content is identified, managed, and distributed Media Management UPnP Device Architecture 1.0 How devices discover and control each other Discovery & Control IPv4 Protocol Suite IP Networking How wired and wireless devices physically connect and communicate Mandatory Ethernet 802.3 or Wi-Fi 802.11, Optional: MOCA Connectivity
DLNA Functions • Discover Find devices on the network without configuration and figure out which capabilities they offer • Browse Look through content, sorted in various ways • Search Find specific content on a device • Stream Send AV content over the network in real-time • Serve Announce a directory of content to the network • Print Send content to a network attached printer • Control Use the network to change the status of a device • Upload Send any content to a server • Download Receive and store any content • Transcode Change the resolution or format of content so that it can be rendered correctly on a device • Quality of Service (QoS) Prioritize network traffic, so that if the network becomes overloaded, the lowest priority traffic is dropped first
Device Category and Device Class • Device Categories: • Device classes sharing common set of system usages • Mobile Handheld Devices (MHD): Mobile devices that leave the home and which have limitations on power, bandwidth, etc • Home Network Devices (HND): Networked media devices that primarily reside in the home or which have capabilities on par with such devices • Home Infrastructure Devices (HID): Devices which interconnect DLNA devices • A device may be in multiple device categories • Device Class: • DLNA certifiable entity that supports a defined system usage • Has requirements at all layers of the DLNA framework/architecture • A product may support one of more device classes

Device Capability Device Class • Device Capability: • A DLNA certifiable add-on that must be combined with at least one device class and which supports a new system usage • Has requirements at only a subset of layers of the DLNA framework/architecture • A product may support one or more device capabilities • Upload / Download Controllers • +UP+ - Upload Controller • +DN+ - Download Controller • Push Controller • +PU+ - Push Controller • Printer Controllers • +PR1+ - Printer Controller+ Image Content Source • +PR2+ - Printer Controller(Print Images stored in other devices) Device Capability

DLNA is an International Standard IEC 62481-1 Title: Digital living network alliance (DLNA) home networked device interoperability guidelines – Part 1: Architecture and protocols http://webstore.iec.ch/Webstore/webstore.nsf/artnum/038283 IEC 62481-2 Title: Digital living network alliance (DLNA) home networked device interoperability guidelines – Part 2: DLNA media formats http://webstore.iec.ch/Webstore/webstore.nsf/artnum/038284 13
How does DLNA do it? • DLNA creates guidelines from open and accepted industry standards • Ethernet / WiFi / MoCA • Network communications • Link Protection • Protect streaming media via DTCP, WMDRM • Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) • Based on IP, HTTP, RTP, SOAP, GENA, SSDP, DIDL Lite • Discovery, actions, eventing • Media Profiles • MPEG2 PS / TS, MPEG4, WMV9 • JPEG, PNG • MP3, LPCM, WMA, AC3 • Playlists • XHTML Formatting (for printing) • Total of 300 combinations of the above formats (and more)
Next Generation Functionality • Electronic Program Guide (EPG) • Share or receive a TV Guide via the network • Remote UI (RUI) • Project the user interface of a device over the network • Interact with remote user interface over the network • Scheduled Recording (SRS) • Add, view or change recording times for TV shows over the network • Content Synchronization • Ensure that two DMSes have the same content (and same versions of content) • Plus 140 new Media Profiles
Link Layer Protection • Encrypt streaming content between devices • Some support for copying / moving content • Local Area Network focused • Supported Solutions: • DTCP-IP • DLNA mandatory for devices supporting Link Protection • Windows Media DRM-ND
Link Protection System UsagePulling Content from Server To Player Control Content Digital Media Player(DMP or M-DMP) Digital Media Server(DMS or M-DMS) Protected link Link Protection is for Render Only No persistence of Content- that requires DRM 17
