  5. Quality Systems • Instituted a formal quality system in 1990 • Upgraded the system to an ISO 9001:2000 compliant system in 2002 • Certified by LRQA to ISO 9001in 2003 • Certified by LRQA to AS9120 in 2005 • Listed on the IAQG “OASIS” database 2005

  11. AS9120 Advantages • Accepted as a serious supplier by primes. • Reduced site audits • Reduction of problem reports • Easy acceptance as a new supplier. • Good internal discipline

  12. Main Gain from “OASIS” • The process of obtaining ISO9001:2000 and AS9120 has instilled in our staff a quality culture that permeates through the whole company. • Pride in our “OASIS” registration • Our staff set themselves the highest standards to maintain it.

  13. Our System • No special preparation for audits . • We sink or swim on our normal everyday procedures. • Ours is a no blame system. • Mistakes happen but very ,very, rarely escape the system. • Hiding problems is not tolerated.

  14. Some Creeping Issues • NADCAP / OASIS overlap. A probably unintended overlap has started to occur with the trend to the use of more composites in aircraft manufacturing. • NADCAP being process based was not intended to apply to material distributors • Some are pushing NADCAP requirements back into the already AS 9120 and IAQG approved audited distribution chain. It is a area needing more clarification.

  15. NADCAP/ AS9120 Issues NADCAP Duplicated Areas • Storage conditions and Logistics • Full traceability • Batch control and shelf Life • Temperature control of chemical storage • Out time recording • Reference to measurement standards All these are already audited under AS9120.

  16. Quality– Cost v Benefits • All expenditures have an opportunity cost • Quality systems have a cost. To date for aviation the benefits have far outweighed the costs. • As the quality of our basic design, manufacturing and procurement systems improve, the law of diminishing returns will apply to new initiatives. • Future developments must give real benefits

  17. Don’t get Complacent • 7/8 of the worlds educated population does not understand the imperial system. • Politics, contrails and global warming. • The Airframe for the 787 is designed for a life span that will take it into an era of oil shortages
