  1. Temperate Ocean By: Ashley Svoboda

  2. Where in the World • The temperate oceans contain 71% of the worlds saltwater. • The temperate oceans are the Atlantic and the Pacific.

  3. Where in the World • The Pacific and Atlantic are in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

  4. Plant Life • Seaweed • Kelp • Rockweed • Sargassum • Seagrass

  5. Animal Life • Fish: Atlantic salmon, Greenland Halibut • Mammals: Gray Whale, Bottlenose Whale • Birds: Emperor Penguin animals.nationalgeographic.com

  6. Organisms Working Together • All ocean organisms are part of a food chain. • The absence of just one would alter the food chain and threaten extinction of other organisms. • Fish is the easiest/cheapest form of protein

  7. animals.nationalgeographic.com www.mcbi.org Extinct/endangered animals & plants • Hawaiian Monk Seal • Caribbean Monk Seal • Blue Whale • Right Whale • Humpback Whale • All Ocean Plants!

  8. Adaptations Deep Water animals adapt to lack of light, season change and food. • They change physical characteristics to find food: like the scary fish in Finding Nemo. • Bigger mouths and stomachs • Longer fins • Lighter skeletons http://courses.ma.org/classes/oceanography/goconnell/marinelife.html

  9. Adaptations II Mammals: • Blubber keeps them warm • Blowholes for easier breathing and diving • Heartbeat slows down when diving animals.nationalgeographic.com

  10. What if my habitat was extinct? • Saltwater fish are an inexpensive source of protein, if this ecosystem was extinct, humans would have a hard time meeting their protein needs. www.aquaworldaquarium.com

  11. What if my habitat was extinct? ( cont…) The absence of fish will effect the food chain and endanger coastal birds that rely on fish. www.southernresorts.com

  12. What if my habitat was extinct? ( cont…) • All plants help create clean air-even ocean plants. Without these plants there would be less fresh air. gardening.savvy-cafe.com

  13. What can we do? • Protect the coasts by not dumping in drains or drilling for oil. • Do not overfish. • No nets for fishing • Don’t abuse the plant life • Conserve: Reduce, Recycle, Re-use

  14. Fun facts! • The earth is actually covered by only one ocean. • 75% of the Earth is covered by Ocean • The ocean supports mammals, fish, birds, invertebrates, amphibians, and plant life.

  15. Comprehension ?’s • What 2 oceans make up the Temperate Ocean? • Name two types of plants in the Temperate Ocean. • Name 2 animals in the ocean. • How do ocean organisms work together? • What ocean animals are endangered? • Give an example of how an organism adapts to the Ocean. • What would happen if the Ocean was extinct?
