A GUIDE TO YOUR COLLEGIATE ELIGIBILITY MANVEL HIGH SCHOOL SEPTEMBER 9, 2019 kcrumedy@alvinisd.net
WE WILL COVER • NCAA FACTS & FIGURES • NCAA INITIAL ELIGIBILITY • SOME HELPFUL TIPS • QUESTIONS
SOME QUICK FACTS THERE ARE NEARLY 2000 AMERICAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES THAT SPONSOR COLLEGIATE ATHLETICS THERE ARE ROUGHLY 350 DIVISION 1 SCHOOLS, 300 DIVISION 2 SCHOOLS, AND 675 DIVISION 3 & NAIA SCHOOLS IN TOTAL, THERE ARE MORE THAN 175,000 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL
ADDITIONAL FACTS ONLY DIVISION 1, 2, NAIA AND JUNIOR COLLEGES AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT ARE AWARDED, MOST ARE EQUIVALENCY, OR PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS MORE ON THIS LATER…..
THE REALITY IS… THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR ELITE LEVEL ATHLETES, BUT NOT ALL ARE AT DIVISION 1
ANOTHER REALITY SCHOOL IS EXPENSIVE!!!
PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE SCHOOL SFA COSTS ~$8500 PER YEAR TUITION AND $19,000 IN LIVING EXPENSES SMU COSTS ~$44,000 PER YEAR TUITION AND $17,000 IN LIVING EXPENSES
WHAT IS A 50% SCHOLARSHIP WORTH??? A 50% SCHOLARSHIP TO A TEXAS STATE SCHOOL WOULD BE WORTH ROUGHLY $14,000 AND LEAVE YOU (PARENTS) OWING $14,000 ANNUALLY - ~$56,000 TOTAL OVER 4 YEARS A 50% SCHOLARSHIP TO A PRIVATE SCHOOL IN STATE OR OUT OF STATE WOULD BE WORTH ROUGHLY $30,000 AND WOULD LEAVE YOU OWING $30,000 PER YEAR - ~$120,000 OVER 4 YEARS
IT’S CHEAPER TO WALK-ON AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS (~$100,000) THAN IT IS TO ACCEPT A 50% SCHOLARSHIP TO A TEXAS PRIVATE SCHOOL OR OUT OF STATE COLLEGE (~$120,000)
COACHES WANT TO KNOW: ARE YOU REGISTERED WITH THE NCAA ELIGIBILITY CENTER? ARE YOU GOING TO BE A FINAL QUALIFIER?
YOU CANNOT RECEIVE ATHLETICS AID AT A DIVISION 1 OR 2 SCHOOL IF YOU ARE NOT A FINAL QUALIFIER OR ACADEMIC REDSHIRT
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS • GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL • COMPLETE 16 CORE COURSES • EARN MINIMUM CORE GPA • EARN A COMBINED SAT OR ACT SCORE ON SLIDING SCALE
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS (BEFORE SENIOR YEAR) • YOU MUST HAVE 10 CORE COURSES ALREADY COMPLETE • 7 OF THOSE 10 MUST BE IN ENGLISH, MATH OR SCIENCE
Recommended Calendar for Student Athletes Freshman and Sophomore Juniors Revise schedules and make sure you’re on time to graduate Complete Amateurism questionnaire with Eligibility Center Take SAT/ACT Visit your schools of interest • Meet with your guidance counselor and map out your future schedules • Register with the Eligibility Center • Research universities and their athletic programs • Take the PSAT and SAT • Attend Summer Camps NCAA Presentation Title Company Name
Senior Year Meet with guidance counselor to make sure you are on track with 16 core units Send 6 semester transcripts to NCAA Eligibility Center for Early Academic Certification If you don’t meet the index, retake the SAT and ACT Have your high school send final transcript with proof of graduation to NCAA Request Final Amateur Status beginning April1st of your senior year
WHAT ARE CORE COURSES THE NCAA IS REALLY ONLY INTERESTED IN KNOWING HOW YOU PERFORMED IN ENGLISH, MATH, SCIENCE, AND SOCIALSTUDIES
YOUR GPA WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER WITHOUT CALCULATING YOUR ART, PE, DRAMA, AND CAREER TECH COURSE GRADES
WITHOUT FLUFF: 3.5 GPA IN HIGH SCHOOL COULD BECOME… <2.6 WITH THE NCAA
TEST SCORES THE NCAA USES A SLIDING SCALE TO DETERMINE IF YOUR TEST SCORES ARE HIGH ENOUGH
CORE GPA YOU NEED AT LEAST A 2.3 GPA TO BE A FULL QUALIFIER A GPA BETWEEN 2.0 AND 2.3 WILL MAKE YOU AN ACADEMIC REDSHIRT
CORE GPA A GPA BELOW 2.0 AND YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE A NON-QUALIFER CANNOT RECEIVE ATHLETIC AID AT AN NCAA SCHOOL
IF YOU’RE A QUALIFIER • DIVISION 1 or 2 ATHLETIC AID • PRACTICE AND COMPETITION IF YOU’RE A NON-QUALIFIER • NO DIV 1 OR 2 ATHLETIC AID • MUST SIT A YEAR IN RESIDENCE • OR ATTEND A JUNIOR COLLEGE
TIPS • MAKE SURE YOUR CLASSES WILL COUNT • TAKE AP CLASSES (AND THEN THE TEST) • TAKE DUAL CREDITS FROM COLLEGE • TAKE COLLEGE SUMMER SCHOOL BEFORE ATTENDING COLLEGE FULL TIME • TAKE THE ACT/SAT AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE (AVOID REMEDIATION)
TRANSITIONING ISN’T EASY • LIVING AWAY FROM HOME • MAKING NEW FRIENDS • TIME MANAGEMENT • EATING ON YOUR OWN (DINING HALL) • COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC COMPETITION • COLLEGE CLASSES/STUDYING
MOST SCHOOLS HAVE A PERSON LIKE ME • HELPING WITH ADMISSIONS • PLANNING SCHEDULES • SUPERVISING STUDY HALL • MENTORING/ADVISING • CHECKING CLASSES/GRADES • REPORTING TO COACHES
YOU MUST ALWAYS BE MAKING SATISFACTORY PROGRESS TOWARD YOUR DEGREE • PASS AT LEAST 6 HOURS PER SEMESTER • AT LEAST 18 HOURS PER ACADEMIC YEAR • APROX 20% OF YOUR DEGREE PER YEAR • MAINTAIN A CUMULATIVE GPA ABOVE 2.0
SAD FACT: MOST STUDENTS WHO LOSE THEIR SCHOLARSHIP DO SO BECAUSE THEY ARE ACADEMICALLY INELIGIBLE
SO… THERE ARE SCHOLARSHIPS OUT THERE TO BE HAD. MAKE SURE YOU’RE A QUALIFIER SO YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM!
