  4. Graduation Requirements Students planning to enter or transfer into a four-year college/university must take a minimum of two credits of the same World Language

  5. What are Technical Colleges looking for? • High School Diploma or GED • Take the SAT, ACT, or ACCUPLACER Test • Will be used for course placement only • The HOPE and Zell Miller Grants can be used for trade-focused certificate and diploma programs • HOPE Grant- Pays portion of tuition; No GPA requirement to earn; 2.0 GPA to maintain eligibility • The Zell Miller Grant- pays full tuition; minimum 3.5 GPA; pays retroactively during the 1st semester • Georgia’s Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grant • Commercial Truck Driving, Diesel Mechanic, Early Childhood Care/Education, Healthcare Technologies, Information Technology, Practical Nursing, Welding • To qualify, a TCSG student must be fully admitted to the college, enrolled in one of the above programs and receiving the HOPE Grant for the same term.

What areTwo-yearColleges looking for? • High School Diploma • At least a 2.0 GPA in core/academic coursework • Complete 4 Math units through Advanced Algebra • Many two year colleges will accept students without Foreign Language from high school, but to transfer to a 4 year college will need to take 1-2 classes in the 2 year college. • SAT/ACT may or may not be required. If you don’t have the SAT or ACT, you can take the ACCUPLACER placement test at the 2 year college for placement.

  7. ACCUPLACER EXAM • Computer-Adaptive College Placement Test (students do not have to take ACT or SAT if attending a 2 year or technical college) • College placement test used to gain admission at 2-year or technical schools • This exam is scheduled through the individual colleges • Evaluates skill levels in Reading, Writing Skills, Writing Essay, Math, and English as a Second Language • Helps place students in appropriate courses (college level or remedial level courses)

What are Four-year Colleges looking for? • 4 math units, including a course beyond Advanced Algebra such as Pre-Calculus or Advanced Mathematical Decision Making, though more selective colleges will be looking for higher math (UGA, Georgia Tech) • At least two years of the same World Language • GPA Requirements- See individual school • SAT / ACT Minimums- See individual school • California, South Carolina, Louisiana , Ole Miss and Tennessee schools – one unit Fine Arts

What are selective four-year colleges looking for? • Stronger GPA (average 3.8 for UGA & Tech) and test scores (Mid 50% Composite = 1220-1360 for UGA, 1475 for Tech) • Rigor of courses taken (average 5-6 AP, mostly honors) • At least two or more years of same World Language, Math through at least Pre-Calculus or Accelerated Math III • How did you get involved in your community? • Did you get involved in high school, and did you demonstrate leadership in any of these activities? • Essays to show writing skill & character of applicant • Letters of Recommendations from counselor & teachers

College GPA Calculations • Student should contact the college to find how it calculates GPA for their admissions • Most colleges only consider academic courses (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language) • Some colleges may give more or less additional quality points than Kell for Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment college courses • For example, UGA & Georgia Tech weight only AP classes with a .5; other GA colleges usually don’t weight at all; Alabama colleges take GPA as transcript reports; South Carolina weights honors & AP the same

What Now • Step One: Register and Take the SAT, ACT or ACCUPLACER • Step Two: Create a list of at least 6 colleges and research • Step Three: Thoroughly check the college’s admission requirements and deadlines • Step Four: Apply online through college’s admission page • Step Five: Send transcript • Step Six: Send supplemental materials (recommendations, SAT/ACT scores, immunizations, etc.) • Step Seven: Research and apply to scholarships

Standardized Testing SAT • www.collegeboard.com ACT • www.actstudent.org Fee Waivers • If your student is on free or reduced lunch, he or she is eligible to receive 2 free SAT and 2 free ACT waivers per school year. • Once your student tests using a SAT waiver, he or she is also able to receive 4 free college application waivers.

Building your College List • “Reach Schools” are those where your academic credentials fall below the school’s range for the freshman class • Apply to 1 or 2 • “Match Schools” are schools where your academic credentials fall within or perhaps slightly exceed the school’s range for the freshman class • Apply to 2 or 3 • “Safety Schools” are schools you will almost certainly get into as your academic credentials are much better than the school’s range for the freshman class • Apply to at least 1

Counselor Recommendations • Seniors should complete the Senior Biography located on Kell’s Counseling Website under Forms: • http://kellcounseling.weebly.com/forms.html • Complete the form and email it to your counselor • Seniors should allow at least 2 weeks for the counselor to complete their recommendation. • Additionally, seniors should provide the Senior Biography Form to teachers and extend the same time courtesy.

  17. Requesting a Transcript • Students can request a transcript by completing a transcript request card located in the counseling office. • Each official copy is $2.00. • Transcripts that are for in-state schools are sent within the day of the request, electronically. • Out of state transcripts are sent by mail.

Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen resident of Georgia one year prior HOPE Scholarship Qualifications: • 3.0 High School CORE GPA • Covers partial tuition for GA colleges • To keep, student must maintain a 3.0 in college • Can regain 1 time only Zell Miller Scholarship Qualifications: • 3.7 high school CORE GPA • Covers full-tuition for GA public colleges • SAT CR + M = 1200 or ACT 26 Composite (one test sitting) • To keep full scholarship, student must maintain a 3.3 in college. • Drop to regular HOPE as long as 3.0 is maintained • Can regain 1 time only

  22. HOPE GPA It IS NOT listed on your transcript • It is based on all your CORE course grades only • Honors coursework is NOT weighted • AP courses receive .5 extra quality points up to 4.0 • Middle school credit is not included You will get your tentative HOPE GPA in March GAFutures.org

HOPE Rigor Requirements • Students who graduate from an eligible high school in Spring 2017 must pass four courses from the following types of courses: • Advanced Math • Advanced Science • Advanced Placement (AP) in core subjects • International Baccalaureate (IB) in core subjects • Core subjects taken at a University System of Georgia (USG) Institution • Advanced World Language GAFutures.org

  24. NCAA Eligibility • You should register with the NCAA Clearinghouse (www.NCAAclearinghouse.net) at the end of your junior year. • The registration fee is $80.00. • NCAA will ONLY accept online registration. • You will need to send an initial and a final transcript to NCAA.
