  4. COURSE CREDITS • You must have accumulated 28 course credits to graduate. • Each class that you take and pass, you get one course credit. • If you do not pass a class, you do not get credit for the class…

  5. Let’s add it up… • Each year has 2 semesters… • Each semester you take 4 classes* • So, 2 semesters x 4 classes each = 8 total courses per year • There are 4 years of high school, so 8 classes per year x 4 years = 32 credits • If you pass all of your classes, you will have 32 credits when you graduate…

  6. Required Courses forGraduation (28 credits)

  7. PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS • 9th 10th grade 6 credits (English 1 & Algebra I/Math I) • 10th 11th grade 12 credits • 11th 12th grade 20 credits • To graduate… minimum of 28 credits

  8. Math I (Algebra I)/Integrated Math I English II Biology End-of-Course Tests(EOCs) Each EOC counts 25% of your final grade for the class.

  10. 2 Elective credits of any combination from either: Career and Technical Education (CTE) Arts Education – (Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts) Second Languages 4 Elective creditsstrongly recommended (four course concentration) from one of the following: Career and Technical Education (CTE) JROTC Arts Education – (Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts) Any other subject area Electives

  12. GPA & CLASS RANK • Rank is established at the end of each school year. Final rank includes all courses attempted in HS GPA (Grade Point Average) A+ (98-100) = 4.0 points A (93-97) = 4.0 points B (85-92) = 3.0 points C (77-84) = 2.0 points D (70-76) = 1.0 points F (below 70) = 0 points

EXAMPLE... • A student made the following gradesafter her first year of high school: • A, B, A, A, B, C, B, A (letter grades) • 4, 3, 4, 4, 3, 2, 3, 4 (points per unit) • 4+3+4+4+3+2+3+4 = 27 points total • to get her GPA for that year, divide the total number of points by the number of classes: • 27 divided by 8 = 3.375 GPA

  14. WEIGHTED COURSES • Honors and Advanced Placement Classes get extra points when calculating GPA. • The typical rule is that Honors courses get 1 additional point and AP courses get 2 additional points.

  16. N.C. Academic Scholars • Students must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 unweighted through the first semester of his/her senior year • Students must complete the course of study outlined in the curriculum guide • Students must complete two credits of higher level courses (honors or AP) during their junior and/or senior years • Students must complete the Graduation Project.

  17. High School Registration • The high school registration process will be done using paper/pencil (and eventually Power School) this year for all 4 high schools. • Today, I will provide you with a Course Curriculum Guide & school specific course information (LHS, JTH, NHHS & AHS) based on your district school for next year. • I encourage you to start thinking about which electives you would like to take in 9th grade (as well as alternates) by using the Student Registration Worksheet provided today. • Teachers will compile their recommendations for your core academic classes, based on your performance in their classes this year. • Turn your Student Registration Worksheet in by Friday, February 28 to me (Mrs. Demolina) • A list of academic and elective classes will then be printed for each of you to take home (based on teacher recommendations and your elective choices), to discuss with your parents, and to send back with parent signatures if everything looks okay.
