  3. Parliamentary Procedure • Most parliamentary procedure is based on Robert’s Rules of Order

  4. Each meeting is conducted by the president Motions may be changed by making amendments Each motion or amendment must be voted on before a new motion or amendment can be discussed. Basic Parliamentary Procedure

  5. REMEMBER!! • Members may vote to pass (or approve) a motion, deny a motion, or postpone a motion.

  6. What is a Motion? • A motion is the orderly way we express our suggestions for doing something or changing something.

  7. Steps in Handling a Motion 1. Member rises and addresses the chair. 2. President recognizes the member. 3. Member makes a motion. 4. Another member seconds the motion. 5. President restates the motion.

  8. Steps in Handling a Motion 6. Members discuss and debate the motion. 7. President calls for a vote on the motion and members vote. 8. President announces the result of the vote.

  9. Parliamentary Procedure Provides... • An orderly way of acting on items of business. • A fair discussion and action by the group. • An opportunity to be heard. • An opportunity for decisions to be based on majority views. • Encourages efficient business decisions.
