Take for Pets for Regular Check-ups Much like you would do with your child or any loved one, you would always ensure that your beloved pet, such as the family dog or cat, is happy and in good health. To this end we provide food and shelter, love, attention and care, but also medical assistance from the vet when they require it. When your pet is unwell, you take them to the vet that you – and they – know, and have them seen too. But, it is always a great idea to take them for regular checkups or so-called wellness testing exams or procedures as well. Women go for mammograms, men for prostate exams and children for various tests to ensure they are well and to detect any possible issues and problems early enough to treat them. The same should apply to your beloved pets. By taking them to the vet on a regular basis – maybe once every year or every 6 months – for a thorough check - you will quickly establish whether all is well with them, whether there are signs of illness or even very serious conditions such as blindness, deafness or even, for example, cancer and other debilitating conditions. Of course you would preferably take them to the vet you always deal with because they will have the details and history of your pet on record, and it just makes it easier if you are able to compare visits and previous results. The wellness exam or test has been
devised to make sure you know exactly in what condition your pet is; it is a general health assessment during which the vet will check various areas of the animal’s health to be able to offer treatment if need be, or to offer advice in terms of which preventive measures can be put in place. The vet will check for different possibilities depending on your pet’s age, breed and general condition, but they will certainly always check, among, the following areas: Their Mouth – Just like the doctor would do with their patients, the vet will check the mouth for signs that could establish a lot about the pet’s health. This includes checking for, among issues, bad breath, fractured teeth, the tongue for its color, as well as the gums. This will often be an indication of whether or not your pet needs dental care or other treatment. Checking for these issues before they become a problem is good policy. Your vet does this during the exam. The pet’s Eyes – The vet checks for discharge, squinting, changes in vision since the last visit, iris and lens health, any signs of eye disease. If present, the vet will know how to best treat a condition, and to offer the owner advice with regard to disease or weakening eyesight. Often, if found early on, eye conditions can be treated successfully. The animal’s ears – During the exam the vet checks for infection and unpleasant smells, as well as for excessive wax build-up. This helps to treat conditions early on, and to prevent the development of serious issues.
The Heart and Lungs – Your pet needs to be checked for abnormal heartbeats – and also to establish that their lungs function properly, and that there are no signs of wheezing or other abnormal sounds present. Their legs – Even if your pet does not complain or show signs of discomfort, the vet will check that they are not limited in their range of movement, that there are no abnormal sounds present in the joints when they move and that the animal shows no signs of pain. The coat, skin and nails – The vet will want to be sure that the coat is healthy and shining, that there are no rashes and warts, ticks or calluses. He/she will check for more signs to ensure that the skin indicates no health problems. The above are some of those issues that your vet will look for during the examination – and prescribe whatever treatment may be necessary to ensure your pet is happy and healthy. We all know that prevention is better than cure, also for your pet’s health. Therefore, take them for regular wellness testing exams.
