You hop in the shower, squeeze some body wash on your sponge and rinse away. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, it turns out that a lot of men with dry skin tend to aggravate their skin conditions with the way they cleanse themselves. Page | 1

  2. Too often, the way we do things before during and after a shower can worsen the condition of our skin or make dry skin symptoms worse. Luckily, dry skin can be kept under control with some simple care and grooming practices. Below are some mistakes you could be making and some tips on how to look after your skin when using body wash. Don’t Lather As tempting as it may be, refrain from lathering body wash over your skin. It certainly feels nice but it can actually do more harm than good if you suffer from dry skin. The more lather a body wash has could be an indicator of its strong moisture stripping agents. A chemical called surfactant is responsible for stripping moisture. Lathering body wash can leave you dry and itchy so a lot of the times all you need to do is use a gentle body wash, scrub your skin gently once over, and rinse off immediately. Avoid Long Hot Showers Hot showers are a great way to warm up during cold mornings or after a long day at work, but they are not really good for your skin. Hot water can cause itching, strips your skin’s natural oils, and can worsen dry skin-related problems such as eczema. In conjunction with using a good body wash, keep water temperatures low when showering. Not Rinsing Off Properly It can be all too tempting to come out of the shower and see a lane of bubbles along the back of your neck and wipe it off with your towel. Little mistakes such as not properly rinsing body wash off your skin can irritate and aggravate dry skin, making it itchy. However, not all body washes cause irritation when left on the skin. Some body washes can be left on the skin and are designed that way because they have special moisturizers that help protect the skin after showers. You Don’t Pat Your Skin Gently Even after you have cleansed your skin, how you get dry is just as important, especially when you have dry skin. Don’t rub the towel roughly on your skin. Rather, pat yourself dry using gentle motions. Page | 2

  3. Choose the Right Body Wash for Your Skin Type Plenty of things easily aggravate dry skin, especially in the shower. A good body wash for men should have added moisturizers which will not dry your skin out. There are also body washes formulated for normal or oily skins. Getting the best out of your body wash all boils down to practices before, during and after showers. Some of the things you do could easily aggravate and irritate your skin. By taking the steps to ensure you are not lathering the cleansing product into your skin, not taking long hot showers, and properly washing off residue will help your skin look and feel better.
