Guidance • something that provides direction or advice as to a decision or course of action • act of guiding or showing the way • the act of setting and holding a course; "a new council was installed under the direction of the king”
Counselling • The act of exchanging opinions and ideas; consultation: joined in counsel with colleagues before deciding the issue. • Advice or guidance, especially as solicited from a knowledge-able person. See Synonyms at advice. • Private, guarded thoughts or opinions: keep one's own counsel. • A lawyer or group of lawyers giving legal advice and especially conducting a case in court.
Principals of Guidance • Holistic development of individual : Guidance needs to be provided in the context of total development of personality. • Recognition of individual differences and dignity: Each individual is different from every other individual. Each individual is the combination of characteristics which provides uniqueness to each person. Similarly human beings have an immense potential. The dignity of the individual is supreme
Acceptance of individual needs: Guidance is based upon individual needs i.e. freedom, respect, dignity. • The individual needs:a continuous guidance process from early childhood throughout adulthood. • Guidance involves:using skills to communicate love, regard, respect for others. • Guidance is based on a true concept of the client. • Guidance is designed to provide assistance to a person in crisis in solving it through self-discovery and self-direction

By (Crow and Crow ) • Every aspect of an individual’s complex personality patterns constitutes a significant factors of his total display of attitude and behaviors. • Although all human beings are similar in many ways, individual differences must be recognized • The function of guidance is to help a person: (a)formulate and accept stimulating worthwhile , and attainable goals of behavior (b)apply these objectives in conducting his affairs

What principals are used in guidance and counseling By (Madali, et al) • Guidance places emphasis on the dignity , worth and individuality of the child as a means of promoting the democratic way of life. • Guidance should not be limited to the few who are obviously maladjusted; it should be extended to every one who can benefit from it • Guidance services help the individual to become increasingly competent in self-direction and self-help. • Guidance is a continuous process of service to the child. • Guidance aims to promote the all around growth and development of the individuals and group evaluation and research should be organized and utilized. • To have an effective guidance, a system of individual and group evaluation and research should be organized and utilized
Principals of Counselling • The counseling setting is of extreme importance. • It is not necessary to have a large, expensively furnished office. What is of extreme importance is privacy. The constant ringing of the telephone or knocking on doors can be distracting and may cause difficulty in establishing rapport. • One may counsel in a home, a park, a chapel, vestry, or any available vacant room. While privacy is very important, it is not wise to choose an out-of-the-way location where there are no humans in sight for miles • A feeling of emotional and physical safety is necessary.
continued ……… • While simplicity of furnishing is acceptable, comfort is necessary. If the room is pleasant and comfortable, • Arrange the chairs in the room so that the client may be able to choose their seat. Avoidplacing chairs in a position where the counselee cannot see you clearly. You also need to be able to see him or her. • Try to the counselor and counselee will feel more relaxed and the sessions will be more productive present a calm, pleasant, and prepared appearance. This will put your client at ease
Conclusion Whenever of the guidance or counseling principle is to be adopted, they should serve to direct the attitudes activities of the person engaged in guidance work. They have value for the person engaged in guidance work. They have value for the person being guided. They serve to promote a smoothly functioning program of guidance and counseling in the schools.
