  3. Neuron & Stem Cell Review • Neurons = a very specific brain cell that transmits information to the rest of your body through electrical and chemical signals. • Neural Stem Cells = self-renewing/changeable cells that develop into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes (the 3 major cell types of the bodies’ Central Nervous System).

  4. Stem Cell Biology • The study of the structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy of stem cells.

  5. Stem Cell Biology + 3D Imaging • Forrest Goodfellow, a graduate student at the University of Georgia’s Regenerative Bioscience Center, is using stem cell biology and 3D imaging together to help track/label neural stem cells.

  6. How? • Using tiny (microscopic) iron beads and a chicken egg, Goodfellow’s team was able to label/track neural stem cells in the egg’s embryo. • The iron beads were attached to each neural stem cell as a label and the team then tracked their progress using MRI technology. • The team determined that this process of labeling could be done w/out damaging the cells.

  7. Why is this important? • We have the knowledge that altering and transplanting neural stem cells directly into the body may help to restore damaged neurons and/or delay the onset of symptoms of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease but so far this process is being done blindly. • There is hope that advancements in new technology will allow us to track and direct cells throughout the body.
