  1. The science of creating flu vaccineshas been established since 1945.All steps of the process undergo strict safety and quality controls.

  2. Each year, laboratories from around the world identify and collect strains of flu virusthat are circulating.

  3. These viruses are then grown inchicken eggs to make the vaccine.

  4. Next, fluid from the eggs is purified, the virus is killed or weakened,and the proteins that create immunity are collected. These proteins are the key component of the vaccine.

  5. The vaccine isprecisely measuredand placed into vials and/or syringes. These are thensealed, inspected and labeled.

  6. All flu vaccines, whether created forthe average seasonal flu or for a newly discovered, pandemic-type flu,are manufacturedfollowing thesestrictly-controlledprocedures.

  7. The entire process of creating a new vaccineand making it available to the public takes about six months.

  8. When you get a flu shot, your body learns to recognize the new type of flu virus and, in about two weeks, builds a defense to attack it. If you are later exposed to the flu, your body is ready todefend you and prevent you from getting sick.
