The Ada Johnson/Otilia Maria Fernandez Women’s Studies Fellowship This fellowship is named in honor of two Iowa graduates who are among the first African-American and Latina women to be found in University records. Begun in 1993, the award is given in alternate years to an undergraduate or a graduate woman.

As a Fulbright scholarship recipient she conducted archaeological work in X’ian, China for one year.

10. Wynonna G. Hubbard Scholarship This scholarship was established by Dr. Philip G. Hubbard in memory of his wife. The award is given each year to an African-American woman with a grade-point average of 3.0 or above who demonstrates an unusual interest in the well-being of others.

18. Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship The Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship recognizes female applicants who demonstrate financial need and are committed to women’s issues, diversity, and social activism. The scholarship is administered by and recipients are selected by the Women’s Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa.

24. The scholarship was established in 1981 by Mrs. Pauline Munn of Iowa City as a memorial to her granddaughter, Katherine Orne, a 1980 graduate of the University and a member of the Iowa City women’s community. 29. Adele Kimm Scholarship In 1992, a bequest from Adele Kimm in memory of her brother S. Conrad Kimm and his wife Hilda made it possible for the Women’s Studies Program to award the Adele Kimm Scholarship to a deserving women’s studies student.

33. Adele Kimm Scholarship 1999 - Sarah Freed, American Studies. 2000 - Fiona Young-Brown, Women’s Studies. Taught in the Department of Women’s Studies and Japanese at the University of Kentucky. Currently conducts freelance projects: running a life coaching practice, working with women who are struggling with infertility, and helping women who want to return to graduate school after raising a family.

34. Adele Kimm Scholarship 2002 - Natalia Chernyayeva, Women’s Studies. Graduate student in Women’s Studies at the University of Iowa. 2003 - Jill Moffett, Women’s Studies. Graduate student in Women’s Studies at the University of Iowa writing her dissertation about how breast cancer activists are working to change the health care system. She’s also doing a practicum for her Masters of Public Health degree, in which she’s looking into the policies of Fortune 500 companies and universities regarding breast- feeding in the workplace.

35. Adele Kimm Scholarship 2004 - Jayne Swift, Women’s Studies. Relocated to Seattle where she is doing temp work and volunteering with the Seattle Gay and Lesbian history project. She plans to apply to graduate school in Gender and Cultural Studies programs. 2006 - Caroline Schultz, International Studies and Women’s Studies. Senior at the University of Iowa. She is a Team Leader for Orientation Services at the University.

36. Jane A. Weiss Memorial Scholarship Jane A. Weiss was an assistant professor of women’s studies and sociology at the University of Iowa at the time of her death in 1981. As a faculty member, she made a generous contribution to the study of women’s issues. In her memory, her friends, colleagues, and family established a scholarship fund. Each year an award is made to a doctoral student whose dissertation promises to expand our understanding of important women’s issues.

37. Jane A. Weiss Memorial Scholarship 1982 - Kathryn Ward, Sociology. Professor of sociology and women’s studies at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Since 2001, she has spent time in Bangladesh - most recently as a Fulbright Fellow in 2004-2005, working on her NSF research, and establishing a women’s training program, Nari Jibon. She continues to work with the program’s training activities in Bangla, tailoring, English, computers, and with three business start ups including a cyber café for women and a tailoring shop.
