Communicating with friends • Which of the following do you use the most and why? • Face Book or MySpace • Instant messaging • E-mail • Hand-written notes • Talking in person • Talking on the phone • Text messaging
Talk about it • What are the strengths of these forms of communication? • What are the weaknesses? • What conflicts or problems can arise from each form? • When are these better than talking face-to-face? When are they worse?
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Break it down
Chapter 1: The Black-Eye-of-the-Month Club • Figurative language – draw what you “see.”
Talk about it • How are figurative language and humor related? • How is figurative language used in this chapter?
What’s the Word? Etymology and Part(s) of Speech Synonyms, Antonyms, Variations If I draw a cartoon of a flower, then every man, woman and child in the world can look at it and say, “That’s a flower.” Junior Spirit Draw it Definition(s) Sentence

Exit slip • How do Junior’s drawings add to the story and to his “voice?” • Write for five minutes and give a specific example from the book.
Day 3: Refresher • Write four words that describe Junior: • Write four words that describe Rowdy:
Style: what do you notice about how this passage is written? After Oscar died, I was so depressed that I thought about crawling into a hole and disappearing forever. But Rowdy talked me out of it. “It’s not like anybody’s going to notice if you go away,” he said. “So you might as well gut it out.” Isn’t that tough love? Rowdy is the toughest kid on the rez. He is long and lean and strong like a snake. His heart is as strong and mean as a snake, too.
Making text talk • Why do you think Alexie chose to write the novel this way? • How does it add to the story? • Is it an effective way of allowing you to “hear” Junior’s voice?
Make paragraph breaks the way you think Alexie would, and punctuate dialogue in the following: • Do you know why you hit me with that book? Mr. P finally asked. It was a trick question. I knew I needed to answer correctly or he’d be mad. I hit you because I’m stupid. You’re not stupid. Wrong answer. Shoot. I tried again.
Exit Slip • Write as much as you can in five minutes on this question: • How does Rowdy relate to the world around him? What are his reasons for destroying the van and cutting off the sleeping brothers’ hair, aside from anger?
Diary Include all of these: • Four vocabulary squares • Printout of your Facebook or MySpace page of one of the characters • Daily writing responses • Projects: • Self-portrait • Emotion definitions • Little pieces of joy Choose one of these: • A paper on the importance of equal educational opportunities (or some other topic of your choosing). Or • A graphic novel about your week of high school (or some other topic of your choosing).
