  2. TEKS • ENGLISH • (4) Listening/speaking/communication. The student communicates clearly by putting thoughts and feelings into spoken words. The student is expected to: • (A) use vocabulary to describe clearly ideas, feelings, and experiences (K-3); • (B) clarify and support spoken messages using appropriate props, including objects, pictures, and charts (K-3); and • (C) retell a spoken message by summarizing or clarifying (K-3). • SCIENCE • (8) Science concepts. The student knows that living organisms need food, water, light, air, a way to dispose of waste, and an environment in which to live. The student is expected to: • (A) observe and describe the habitats of organisms within an ecosystem; • (B) observe and identify organisms with similar needs that compete with one another for resources such as oxygen, water, food, or space; • (C) describe environmental changes in which some organisms would thrive, become ill, or perish; and • (D) describe how living organisms modify their physical environment to meet their needs such as beavers building a dam or humans building a home. • SOCIAL STUDIES • (17) Social studies skills. The student communicates effectively in written, oral, and visual forms. The student is expected to: • (A) express ideas orally based on knowledge and experiences; • (B) create written and visual material such as stories, poems, pictures, maps, and graphic organizers to express ideas; and • (C) use standard grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation.

  3. When did dinosaurs roam the earth? • Dinosaurs existed about 228 million years ago, during the Mesozoic era; the Triassic period, Jurassic Period, and Cretaceous period.

  4. Who were some key players in the dino-world? • Tyrannosaurus Rex—one of the biggest meat eaters • Brachiosaurus—one of the tallest • Velociraptor—one of the fastest

  5. What might have caused the dinosaur’s mass extinction? • Asteroid—most widely accepted • Volcano • Mass starvation • Various others

  6. What were dinosaur habitats? • Triassic: weather was warm and wet.  The plants that grew were mostly ferns, bushes and giant pine trees.  Dinosaurs were generally small in size. • Jurassic: The land masses began to be separated by oceans.  The continents began to move apart. The landscape was lush and tropical.  There were many more giant trees, tree ferns and ferns covering the land.  The weather was warm and tropical.  There was more geologic activity with the formation of volcanoes. • Cretaceous: Was the time when there were more different types of dinosaurs alive on the earth.  The continents had drifted further apart and geologic activity increased.  Flowering plants first appeared during the Cretaceous period.

  7. Dinosaur Activities • Dinosaur Fact File—each student is assigned a different dinosaur to research and create a fact file on. The students will then present their research to the class. • Dino Diorama--The students use a shoebox and supplies such as construction paper, markers, and other things to re-create their dinosaur’s habitat. • Dino Bingo—create cards using the dinosaurs that the children made fact files on. Call out facts about each dinosaur and have the child put a chip over the dino that the fact applies to.
