Additional negative outcomes included:
Possibly triggering cardiac arrhythmias
Atelectasis
Pulmonary infections
Damages to the bronchial tree
No definitive evidence of saline breaking up secretions
The author suggests a change in practice of routinely instilling saline prior to suctioning
