Overview • Examine the views of IT managers on the skills required of entry-level IT workers • Discuss implications for advising, curriculum development and job placement
Methodology • Developed survey • Distributed via email to IT managers and workers • Managers: 391 respondents, 348 completes • Workers: 299 respondents, 238 completes • 32 skills/traits ranked in terms of importance for new hires • Additional items for demographics and characteristics of respondents organization
Discussion/Conclusion • Interpersonal and personal skills/traits most important • Technical skills are more important for entry-level workers than organizational and managerial skills • Relevant work experience is an important factor in hiring entry-level IT workers • Implications for student advisement and job placement
