  1. Do other techniques of obesity control work? Causes of obesity? Obesity is a complex disease and a root cause of many other conditions, including cardiac diseases, diabetes, blood pressure, sleep apnea, depression, etc. Many people perceive obesity as a cosmetic concern, but it is not; it is a severe medical condition in need of serious medical treatment. Obesity is the excessive fat accumulation in the body, with a BMI of 30 or higher. BMI is the body mass index which can be calculated using the height and weight of a person using the following formula; BMI = A healthy BMI spans from 18.5 to 24.9. An overweight individual has a BMI of 25 or higher.   With the increase in obesity, BMI proves to be a very reliable and useful guide to measure obesity and overweight and keep track of the body’s health. A range of different factors can contribute towards obesity which may include; Lifestyle Eating habits Genetics Environmental factors Certain illnesses Emotional factors Hormonal conditions Eating disorders Treatment for obesity control         There are several reasons why people find it difficult to maintain a healthy weight. We live in a world where high energy food consumption with minimum to no physical activity is the most common lifestyle, and people can’t find enough time or will to change it.

  2. Psychotherapy for obesity control Exogenous obesity includes eating orders associated with psychological and emotional origins. Individuals with certain eating disorders develop overeating habits in a situation of crisis to deal with stress and anxiety. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is used to treat eating disorders to develop healthy eating habits. Pharmacotherapy for obesity control Anti-obesity drugs have the efficacy of losing 3-7% of net body weight. These drugs are used to decrease weight by increasing metabolism, reducing appetite, suppressing hunger and cravings. It is considered best in patients; who have lost some weight with lifestyle modifications and need additional weight loss, who are facing difficulty maintaining weight after losing weight with lifestyle interventions, or in patients who are unable to make change lifestyle due to some other medical condition. Pharmacotherapy is recommended in people with a BMI of more than 30 or with a BMI of 27, one of the complications of obesity, i.e., heart disease, blood pressure, sleep apnea, etc. Following medications are utilized to combat obesity; Orlistat Phentermine and topiramate Bupropion and naltrexone Liraglutide Surgical treatment for obesity control     Bariatric surgery makes changes in the digestive system in order to help reduce weight; the most common procedures are; Gastric bypass Sleeve gastrectomy Currently, bariatric surgery is the most effective means of treating obesity and its associated complications, with the estimate of losing 5-15 pounds per week during the first 30 days, and by two months, most people lose about 20% of their body weight.
