1. EROSION & SEDIMENT CONTROL PROJECT PROFILE Lake Wabamun Shoreline Protection Nilex provides erosion solutions for Lake Wabamun clean-up. Solution In the case of two adjoining landowners whose property was directly affected by this spill, CN’s property remediation included removal of the contaminated soil and their existing shoreline revetment systems (four truckloads of tires). LOCATION: Lake Wabamun, Alberta PRODUCT: Armorflex® Articulating Concrete Block Revetment System CN was responsible for installing new erosion control systems on the properties to protect the land from erosion and scouring caused by the lake’s wave action and by the ice movement during winter months. The landowners requested an alternative solution that would protect their lake front lots from erosion, but would also allow for the establishment of lawn vegetation. PROJECT PARTNERS: Owner CN Rail Consultant Paragon Soil & Environmental Consulting Completion Date September 2005 Challenge As a result of a CN train derailment on August 3, 2005, about 800,000 litres of heavy and pole- treating oil were spilled in the Lake Wabamun area, with an estimated 196,000 litres of the oil spilling into the lake. CN’s reclamation agenda for environmental clean-up included removal of all contaminated soil, vegetation and old revetment systems from beach front properties. Nilex recommended installing an Armorflex Class 50 articulating concrete block revetment system. In addition to promoting lawn vegetation, the Armorflex system would protect the lot’s granular subsoil from ice scouring erosion. The Armorflex system is ideal for installations in which both permanent erosion protection and vegetation establishment is required.

2. Lake Wabamun Shoreline Protection Installation Nilex and Armortec Canada provided technical support for installation of 19 Armorflex mats covering 235 square metres. Challenging conditions included an elevated rail track, steep incline, and a slippery access road. The custom Armorflex system arrived on site as a series of prefabricated mats. Using an excavator and I-beam, the mats were installed over a site specific geotextile on prepared subgrade. Above the lake waterline, the mats were covered with a layer of top soil and sod.
