  1. Just like out of a Bond film : Inside The Wikileaks Headquarters WIKILEAKS is being broadcast from a Cold War bunker deep within Sweden’s White Mountain, Stockholm. The site is being hosted by an isp called Bahnhof. This is effectively the headquarters of Wikileaks. The Wikileaks Headquarters has surprised everybody with its extraordinary location and conditions. Pionen – White Mountain designed by Albert France-Lanord Architects is housed in a former 1,200 sqm Cold War bunker (originally built as a World War II bunker); an amazing location 30 meters down under the granite rocks of the Vita Berg Park below Sofia Church in Stockholm – Sweden - Basically, the peony White Mountains an upgraded version of a nuclear-safe shelters that Swedish civil defense used during the Cold War. WikiLeaks is an international non-profit media organization that publishes submissions of otherwise unavailable documents from anonymous sources and leaks. Its website, launched in 2006, is run by The Sunshine Press.Within a year of its launch, the site claimed a database that had grown to more than 1.2 million documents. The WikiLeaks website first appeared on the Internet in January 2007. The site claims to have been “founded by Chinese dissidents, journalists, mathematicians and start-up company technologists, from the US, Taiwan, Europe, Australia and South Africa”.The creators of WikiLeaks have not been formally identified. It has been represented in public since January 2007 by Julian Assange and others. Assange describes himself as a member of WikiLeaks’ advisory board. News reports in The Australian have called Assange the “founder of Wikileaks” WikiLeaks describes itself as “an uncensorable system for untraceable mass document leaking”. WikiLeaks is hosted by PRQ, a Sweden-based company providing “highly secure, no-questions-asked hosting services.” PRQ is said to have “almost no information about its clientele and maintains few if any of its own logs.” The servers are spread around the world with the central server located in Sweden. Julian Assange has said that the servers are located in Sweden (and the other countries) “specifically because those nations offer legal protection to the disclosures made on the site”. it’s all very atmospheric….. 2. Rock solid: The entrance to the Pionen high-security computer storage facility

  3. With his mystery, the flamboyant WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange seems to be doing his best to impersonate a James Bond villain. - How appropriate, then, that he has chosen what looks like an 007 film set as the back-up store for the thousands of confidential emails and documents that have shaken the world. - These pictures show the Pionen data centre, 100ft below ground in a former Cold War nuclear bunker, where all the WikiLeaks files are being kept. Nerve centre: Super-servers which act for storage for many companies are also used by WikiLeaks to store its information

  4. U-boat back-up: Submarine engines are used as emergency generators at the Bahnhof internet service provider, in Stockholm, Sweden

  5. The vast cave, drilled into granite under the Vita Berg Park in Stockholm, houses dozens of computer servers used as storage by many companies. Complete with a 'floating' conference room, suspended glass corridors, lunar landscape flooring, designer furniture, and even, intriguingly, German U-boat engines as back-up generators, all that is missing is the bleached-blond Assange himself, stroking a white cat. The disused bunker was reopened in 2008 with its futuristic design the brainchild of Swedish architects Albert France-Lanord, who were inspired by Bond sets created by Sir Kenneth Adams. - The brutalist design is softened by plants kept alive by brilliant solar lighting and artificial waterfalls. While on the run from Swedish and American authorities, Assange has had to use this secure base for his files. Chilly reception: The bunker, drilled into granite under the Vita Berg Park, could withstand a nuclear attack

  6. WikiLeaks was hosted by internet retailer Amazon but it was kicked off its website following intense pressure from American politicians. Assange then used a French firm before being expelled from there as well. As a result, WikiLeaks has set up numerous 'domain names' in dozens of countries, each linked to one that keeps copies of the original files. Assange has turned to Sweden because the country's laws are some of the best in the world for protecting the work of freedom of speech campaigners. Under Swedish law, WikiLeaks cannot be prosecuted and neither can the people who pass it information. Wikileaks is funded by a mixture of public donations, help from Assange's wealthy patrons and, so far as anyone can tell, a fair bit by Assange himself. But the cost of this storage will be very little, because although Assange's team have released several million documents, in data terms this is not a large amount. Everything WikiLeaks has in its possession could probably be stored on a high-capacity memory stick. However, putting it into the trust of this set-up - which any self-respecting Bond villain would be proud of - must surely pander to Julian Assange's huge ego.

  7. Space age: Under Swedish law, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange cannot be prosecuted for publishing the sensitive information

  8. Code-named 'pionen' (Swedish for the peony flower) the bunker was first designed in the mid-1940s, then refurbished as a nuclear-attack proof civilian defence shelter at the height of the Cold War. But the place looks like something straight out of a science-fiction or espionage film, reflecting the secretive character of its most talked-about tenant, WikiLeaks' leader Julian Assange

  9. A visitor enters the data hall through sliding glass doors, engulfed in the steam caused by the evacuated heat of the servers, on the side of Vita Berget (The White Mountain) in a trendy corner of the Soedermalm borough of Stockholm

  10. Once inside, the heat and humidity are stifling as a slightly slanted ramp leads into the hall itself, the wall flanked by tropical plants that would never survive the chilly temperatures outside

  11. "All the global fuss is made about two little boxes," said Jon Karlung (above), chairman and founder of Bahnhof, one of the companies providing server space to the whistleblowing website. The servers are kept in a locked white cabinet along with rows and rows of others in a large room with stone walls - it has been carved directly into the mountain

  12. Submarine engines are used as emergency generators (above). "We are very well protected for physical attacks, but that is not going to happen. The real threat is maybe legal and probably cyber attacks," says Karlung
