What Your Clubs Need to Know About CBI Colleen Biggerstaff SLP Risk Management Chairman
Why Background Checks? National Research indicates that dishonest individuals seeking to defraud others will attempt to establish themselves through affiliation with respected community groups to legitimize their reputations.
Kiwanis International Guidelines Texas-Oklahoma Policy No. 33 All adults working with Kiwanis programs for youth under the age of 18 are expected to read, understand and agree to abide by these guidelines.
WhyWhy guidelines? Youth deserve the best Kiwanis has to offer. This includes the relationship and interaction between youth impacted by Service Leadership Programs and those adults who so generously give of themselves to ensure the success of Kiwanis leadership development.
Chaperone Kiwanis International Guidelines Texas – Oklahoma Policy No. 33.3 A chaperone shall be defined as a Kiwanis member, faculty member, parent, legal guardian, or person who is over the age of twenty one (21) and approved by the school, and registered with and accompanying the youth at a specific event.
Background Checks Kiwanis International Guidelines Texas – Oklahoma Policy No. 33.9 District Background checks for adults working with youth shall be required and should conform to applicable local and state laws and requirements. In the absence of local or state regulations, Kiwanis clubs are required to undertake confidential background checks for adults who will be working directly with youth under the age of 18. Texas – Oklahoma Policy No. 34.4 A District CBI will be required on the two-year anniversary date of each club member working directly with students under the age of 18.
There are two options for submitting your personal information:
Information submitted by club • You complete the consent form and personal data sheet and your club’s secretary signs the verification; • You or your club secretary mails the information to the district office; • The administrative secretary enters the data into the secure website of the investigating agency; • The data is encrypted during transmission using 128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL). • The first 5 digits of the SSN disappear and are NEVER seen again. The information is not saved or stored.
Information submitted by you • You complete the consent form and your e-mail information page; • It is imperative that the requestor’s original signature be on the consent form. • You or your club secretary mails the forms to the district office. Be sure your email is on this form!
Information submitted by you • Once the e-mail information form has been received, you will receive by e-mail a link (URL) to the secure web-site where YOU can enter your own information.
DISTRICT EVENTS A completed District CBI is required before any Kiwanian may attend any District events for youth under the age of 18. These events include but are not limited to: a. K-Family b. Weekend Of A Lifetime or Key Leader c. Key Club District Convention d. Circle K District Convention e. Any workshops or meetings sponsored by Kiwanis, CKI, or Key Club for youth under the age of 18.
Jan. 2010 - All Clubs are required to have a policy in place and a copy on file with the District Office. February 2011 – All new members are required to have a District CBI prior to approval by the club’s board. Be sure all members of your club who are working with youth have had their district background check before inviting them to assist at a school event.
