VIOLENCE Violence is "the use of physical force so as to injure, abuse, damage, or destroy." Less conventional definitions are also used, such as the World Health Organization's definition of violence as "the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation.

3. WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ? • Domestic violenceis violenceor other abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation. It may be termed intimate partner violence when committed by a spouse or partner in an intimate relationship against the other spouse or partner, and can take place in heterosexual or same-sex relationships, or between former spouses or partners. Domestic violence can also involve violence against children, parents, or the elderly. It takes a number of forms, including physical ,verbal , emotional , economic,religious,reproductive, and sexual abuse, which can range from subtle, coercive forms to marital rape and to violent physical abuse such as choking, beating, female genital mutilation, and acid throwing that results in disfigurement or death. Domestic murders include stoning,bride burning,honor killings, and dowry deaths.

Globally, the victims of domestic violence are overwhelmingly women, and women tend to experience more severe forms of violence.They are also likelier than men to use intimate partner violence inself-defence.In some countries, domestic violence is often seen as justified, particularly in cases of actual or suspectedinfidelity on the part of the woman, and is legally permitted. Research has established that there exists a direct and significant correlation between a country's level of gender equality and rates of domestic violence, where countries with less gender equality experience higher rates of domestic violence.Domestic violence is among the most underreported crimes worldwide for both men and women. Due to social stigmas regarding male victimization, men who are victims of domestic violence face an increased likelihood of being overlooked by healthcare providers.

5. TYPES OF VIOLENCE • Physical ViolencePhysical violence occurs when someone uses a part of their body or an object to control a person’s actions. • Sexual ViolenceSexual violence occurs when a person is forced to unwillingly take part in sexual activity. • Emotional Violencemotional violence occurs when someone says or does something to make a person feel stupid or worthless. • Psychological ViolencePsychological violence occurs when someone uses threats and causes fear in an individual to gain control. • Spiritual Violence Spiritual (or religious) violence occurs when someone uses an individual’s spiritual beliefs to manipulate, dominate or control that person. • Cultural ViolenceCultural violence occurs when an individual is harmed as a result of practices that are part of her or his culture, religion or tradition.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE • A woman is assaulted or beaten every nine seconds. • 1 in 3 women—and 1 in 4 men—have been in abusive relationships, and 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have faced severe physical violence. • 20 people are abused by an intimate partner every minute, adding up to 10 million each year. • More than 200,000 phone calls are placed to domestic violence hotlines every year. • Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crimes. • The presence of guns in a home where domestic violence is a problem increases the risk of a murder by 500%.
