What are gaiters? Gaiters are an important element of your gear for winter & spring backpacking. This garments worn over the shoe & lower pant leg. Used primarily as personal protective equipment.
Why Gaiters are Important • Useful for adventurous tour. • Prevent sand, rocks, or snow from slipping in-between your pants & the top of your boots. • The hiking or the snow gaiters are usually made with material that is safe to be worn and protects our feet and calves from the dirt • There are a number of factors that need to be considered before investing in a pair of running or hiking gaiters.
Factors to be Considered • The Height • The Material • The Size • The Fitting • Quality
Height • The height of the gaiters needs to be considered depending on the area that you would be covered. • If you are planning to go out into the grassy terrains or the bushes, the gaiters that are long and cover major portion of your calf as well are the best ones. • The short gaiters are the ones that cover the feet until the ankle. • They can easily cover the basic footwear that you are wearing. • These low cut gaiters help protect against dirt and dust
Material • The basic material that gaiters were first made from is rubber. • There was a time when the rubber was found to be the only most water repellent material that gaiters could be made from. • There are many gaiters that are light weight, those that can be folded and easily carried. • These materials not only make them waterproof and light weight, but there are also a few that make the gaiters durable.
The Size and the Fitting • There are gaiters that come with a zip or a Velcro that they are fitted with. • You can choose any size of gaiters that’s fit your leg • This helps seal your leg and not let any dirt particles enter inside the gaiters. • Therefore, you need to be sure about the kind you prefer. • The Velcro ones usually give you a tight fit, but these are the ones that are more prone to dust getting settled in the Velcro itself.
