Aim – Reduce hospital acquired multidrug resistant organisms on one unit in three phases over one year. • Front Line Workers- only way it was successful! • Discover and Action Dialogues • More Alcohol Based Sanitizers- Wipes • Identified patient and visitor teaching as necessity. • Change of Shift Huddles to educate and communicate • Encouraged non-punitive culture to “catch and remind” each other. Be proud we are the Infectious Disease Unit.
Leadership Engagement • Imperative to have leadership engagement. • Let us use his office for conference calls. • Staff RN’s wanted to know if he was coming • Press . . .and more press . . . • Accolades …. and more accolades . . . • Our Newsletter- nursing and hospital-wide • Board of Directors • Medical Executive Committee
Lessons Learned • Found surprise positive deviants- a CA on evenings helped with most of the audits and learning conversations on her shift. • Would include more disciplines next time. • Need to touch base regularly even if to huddle and make to do lists to keep forward momentum. • Would do action plans from the beginning. • “Real work and progress” takes place during work time- not meeting time. • Huddles work the best. AND • HAND HYGIENE IS # 1
