Review of Abdominal Vasculature and Angiography Susan Skaff Hagen Radiology January 31, 2006
Objectives • Review Abdominal Vasculature • Review Angiography • Look at films
Abdominal Vasculature • 3 Unpaired Branches • Celiac • Superior Mesenteric Artery • Inferior Mesenteric Artery • Paired Branches • Phrenics • Suprarenals • Renals • Gonads
Celiac Artery • Origin • Abdominal Aorta just distal to aortic hiatus of diaphragm • Course • Divides into Left Gastric, Splenic, and Common Hepatic Artery
Superior Mesenteric Artery • Origin • Abdominal Aorta distal to Celiac Artery • Course • Splits into Intestinal Arteries, Middle Colic, Right Colic, Ileocolic • Supplies • Jejunum, ileum, transverse colon, ascending colon, cecum
Inferior Mesenteric Artery • Origin • Abdominal Aorta proximal to Common Iliac Arteries • Course • Branches to Left Colic, Sigmoid, and Superior Rectal • Supplies • Part of descending colon, sigmoid colon and proximal part of rectum
Angiography • Invasive procedure, requires injection of radiopaque contrast and uses x-rays to take a picture. • The images will reveal the shape and course of the vasculature which can help diagnose aneurysms, stenosis etc.
Small Case • 47 yo wf with congenital conduction disorder in heart leading to dilated cardiomyopathy presented with abdominal pain that began 24 hours ago.
