  1. CONTENTdm for Art Teaching Images The Rough Road in Reno Glee Willis Digital Projects Librarian University of Nevada, Reno

  2. Every path to a new understanding begins in confusion. Mason Cooley This is the story of our political journey as we learned to build our art-architecture collections.

  3. What Will I Cover? » Why CONTENTdm for art teaching images? » The “team effort” to build the collection (and, oh, by the way, end up with acceptable metadata) » Where and how we’ve stumbled along the way » What’s on the horizon?

  4. Why CONTENTdm for art teaching images? » Started by considering more specialized tools for working with teaching images (MDID and Almagest) » Immersed myself in learning the “lingo” used by VRA folks » Coaxed Greg Zick into including more “classroom presentation tools” in CONTENTdm » Introduced UNR’s art history “ring leader” to MDID; Almagest’s code wasn’t ready for public release; ditto VAGA from U of Denver » Proceeded with CONTENTdm because we were already very familiar with its capabilities, whereas MDID was lacking in so many of them

  5. The “team effort” » Glee contacted Ed Teague at the U of Oregon about his flattening of the VRA Core into the CONTENTdm VRA Template » Art history ring leader “stepped up” to formulate the data dictionary for our flattened VRA template » Glee worked with new media prof to load his images » Glee worked with the art history ring leader to load her images » Art history ring leader solicited permission from Gardner to load its art images into CONTENTdm as restricted items

  6. 7. VRA Template Implementation Ed Teague’s Crosswalk – Our Starting Point

  8. VRA Template Implementation UNR’s Field Properties

  9. Our restricted access art and architecture collection

  10. Our restricted access anthropology collection

  11. Where and how we have stumbled along the way » Mac owners didn’t want to “play well” with others » Slide libraries are “different” » Difficulty in assigning group permissions for entire classes » Understanding CONTENTdm’s approach to logging in to restricted collections » PowerPoint plug-in unable to handle JP2s » Expense of running the Acquisition Station on Macs for batch loads, edits, and item-level permissions assignments

  12. What’s On The Horizon? » Finish loading Davis Art Images purchased to date » Train ceramics and book arts instructors to load their images » Incorporate more “bells and whistles” following Reed College’s lead; create geospatial access(?) » More “scrubbing” of the metadata for improved user access » Creation of “lecture sets” and “study sets” » Linking from online course syllabi
