Dr. M.S. Swaminathan • Dr. M.S. Swaminathanis a stalwart personality. Unfortunately, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan has left us and passed away recently. Early Life and Education: • Born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. • Initially aspired to join the Civil Services but redirected his focus to agriculture due to events like the Quit India Movement and the Bengal famine. • Enrolled at the Agriculture College in Coimbatore to pursue his interest in agriculture.
Diverse Roles in Agriculture: • Held prominent roles internationally and in India, including leadership positions in FAO, IUCN, and WWF (India). • Served as Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). • Headed the National Commission on Farmers from 2004-06, supporting farmers' concerns.
Recommendations of MS Swaminathan Report: • Increased public investment in agriculture infrastructure. • Enforcement of Minimum Support Prices (MSP) nationwide. • Suggested setting MSP at C2+50% to ensure farmer income. • Advocated for "One Nation-One Market" and market development. • Emphasized land reforms, water management, and credit access. • Proposed the establishment of an Agriculture Risk Fund and other initiatives.
