  1. Dyslexia Tutoring There are a lot of kids that are slow readers, but there are some kids that look at a sentence over and over and can’t make sense of it. Those students were teased in the past because they could not keep up, but the reality is that we all learn a different pace. There are also people whose brains are not designed in a way that makes reading easy. One of the major learning disabilities that many struggle with is dyslexia. This is not a measure of intelligence, instead showing that we all think differently and our brains might not process information the same way as our peers. Here are just a few things to know about dyslexia tutoring and how to approach teaching these kinds of students. Who Has It and How Do You Know? As mentioned, there was a time where we did not know much about the disorder and just classified kids as slow because they were not able to read as well as their peers. Over time, we realized that this concept did not hold much water. Dyslexia is very common, to the point where as many as one out of five kids has it, but that does not mean that everyone is diagnosed. There is no blood sample that you can analyze to tell if someone is dyslexic, only a series of tests that will help give you a better sense of the student’s issues and needs. That said, there are some tell-tale signs of dyslexia that you can look out for, such as a hard time learning simple rhymes, a struggle to read short words when reading out loud (such as but, the, and, or, and others), and a hard time sounding out new words. A lot of students try to make up for their difficulties by remembering words, but you can’t do that forever and most eventually need some help. Fortunately, dyslexia does not mean that you are slow and you can still stay in normal classes like the rest of your friends.

  2. What It Does to Kids The problem with dyslexia is not so much the fact that it makes it a struggle to read, although that is certainly a major part of it. Instead, much of the damage of dyslexia comes in social settings. The feeling of not knowing a word can be embarrassing and many students stop participating, for fear they will be ostracized. This is another great reason for dyslexia tutoring because you want to make sure that they have a safe space to learn and ask questions that their peers will not bully them for. How Can You Help? With knowledge of the limitations caused by dyslexia, you can start to build ways in your life to overcome those. Learning a lot of sight words will help because you have most of the baseline of language. Another great way to get around the issue of books taking way too long to read is through audio books. It can be especially helpful to read along as well because you might start training your brain. Source: https://tutoring.hatenablog.com/entry/2020/05/16/155427
