Porosity has two main causes: solidification shrinkage and gas porosity. Gas porosity is the fraction of a rock or sediment filled with a gas (most often nitrogen, oxygen or hydrogen).<br>Web Page: https://ragagroup.com/what-is-porosity-in-die-casting-how-to-minimize-it/

What is Porosity in Die-Casting & How to Minimize it? Porosity in die-casting refers to the presence of voids or air pockets within the cast metal part. It is a common defect that can compromise the mechanical properties, aesthetics, and functionality of the ?nished product. Porosity occurs due to the entrapment of gases, usually air or steam, during the solidi?cation process of the molten metal inside the die-casting mold.
Temperature Improper temperature control can lead to premature solidification of the molten metal, trapping gases within the material.
Venting Inadequate venting in the die- casting mold can prevent trapped gases from escaping, leading to porosity.
To minimize porosity in die-casting, several steps can be taken: 1. Proper Alloy Selection: Choose an alloy with properties that are less prone to porosity during solidification. 2.Optimized Temperature Control: Maintain precise temperature control to ensure the molten metal stays at the right temperature throughout the process. 3.Mold Design: Optimize the mold design to include proper venting channels, which allow gases to escape during the filling process. 4.Injection Parameters: Set appropriate injection speed and pressure to ensure smooth and controlled metal flow, reducing turbulence and minimizing gas entrapment.
Why Porosity happen? When a casting is created, molten metal is pushed through at extremely high pressures into the die-cast machines. Molten metal is allowed to be solidified. The molten metal introduced causes the air pockets to form or Porosity. Most commonly it happens • When the material changes state – (from liquid to solid), the shrinkage can cause pores to form. Gases from different places can cause impurities. Moreover, it encloses the material, resulting in higher material porosity. •
