Doubling Teaching and Learning at IUPUI • Using the 2002 as the basis for doubling, increase to 4,000 the number of baccalaureate degrees granted by 2010 (from 2,212 to projected 3,318) • Increase at least 75% the freshman to sophomore retention rate for first time full-time students beginning in Fall 2008 (65% to 75%) • Increase the 6-year graduation rate to 40% for first-time full-time students entering in Fall 2004 (22% to 40%)

Space Planning • ET Building • Phase I of basement renovation is complete • Phase II will be completed by June 30, 2006 • Labs and offices will move to basement by August 15, 2006 • Several teaching labs will be consolidated • Third floor renovation will start in summer 2006 • CIT will move to ET by January 2007 from SL Building

Topics Discussed • IUPUI has in place various programs to attract students • There are a number of initiatives, such as PLTW, that are in place and appear to be working • Project Lead The Way • Hosted the conference in 2005 • 337 students attended • More would come if capacity had allowed • Conference included career based break-out sessions • Forensics • Motorsports • Indiana Dept of Education sponsors the program in the high schools • Each school is paid $450 per student

41. Other Points • Emphasis seems to be on attracting top students. Are average students adequately addressed? • IPS has an excellent relationship with West Lafayette • Dr. Sam White is preparing plan to address minority students • Stakeholders: Students, Parents, High School Teachers, IUPUI, Industry, Government • Can DIAC help the school have an impact with teachers? • As a resource • By recognizing outstanding high school teachers • What is being done for high school teachers now? • PLTW conference • Teachers requested more sessions for teachers • Teachers must be trained to teach the program • Some schools would like to offer the program but do not have trained faculty – (George Washington)

Some Starting Points • Sam White has been investigating the diversity efforts of the school • Looking at 6th – 11th grade • DIAC could work with Dr. White to see if we can attract more IPS students • IPS high potential students are already actively recruited • Perhaps we could look at the next tier of student • DIAC could offer an award to the PLTW teachers who have had the most impact • Present the award at the Honors Convocation – April 21

Education & Awareness Subcommittee • Draft Vision • Engineering & Technology attracts a growing number of more highly qualified students from a diversified population and is perceived as the school of choice by Stakeholders • Draft Mission • DIAC Education & Awareness Sub-Committee provides advice and other assistance to help the school achieve this vision. Specifically, • Facilitate(foster) a closer relationship between IUPUI and the high school community, i.e. teachers, guidance counselors • Sponsor industry speakers in the high school classroom • Sponsor DIAC recognition of high school teachers • Address groups of teachers to increase awareness of industry needs and activities
