    1. AG II Unit 7 Entomology

    3. Entomology There are more than 750,000 species of insects which have been identified There is about 2,000,000 species that have not been identified

    4. Life cycles of insects There are two different life cycles that an insect can go through and they are: Incomplete Metamorphosis Complete Metamorphosis Metamorphosis- a complete change of form structure or substance.

    5. Life cycle of insects Incomplete Metamorphosis eggs to Early nymph (no wings) to late nymph (wings developing) Goes to Adult

    6. Life cycle of insects Incomplete Metamorphosis

    7. Life cycle of insects Complete Metamorphosis Egg Young larva Mature larva Pupa Adult

    8. Life cycle of insects Complete Metamorphosis

    9. Parts of insect There are three parts to any insect Head Thorax Abdomen

    10. Parts of insect

    11. Insect classes How are insects grouped? They are grouped by the way they feed on plants. So they are grouped by their mouth parts.

    12. Insect classes There are six different mouth parts Sponging Rasping- sucking Siphoning Chewing-lapping Chewing Piercing- sucking

    13. Insect mouth parts sponging

    14. Insect mouth parts Rasping- sucking

    15. Insect mouth parts Siphoning

    16. Insect mouth parts Chewing-lapping

    17. Insect mouth parts Chewing

    18. Insect mouth parts Piercing- sucking

    19. Crop damage Insects have either chewing or sucking mouthparts. Damage symptoms caused by chewing insects are leaf defoliation, leaf mining, stem boring, and root feeding. Insects with sucking mouthparts produce distorted plant growth, leaf stippling, and leaf burn

    20. Beneficial insects Insects that provide a service to the plants. Bee’s pollinate flowers, make honey, bee’s wax Silk form the silk worm/moth.

    21. Beneficial insects Entomophagous- insects that feed on other insects. These insects eat the insects that cause damage to plants act as scavengers or feed on undesirable plants to contribute to nutrient recycling. Ex ladybug larva, and green lacewing

    22. Beneficial insects The braconid wasp lays an egg inside an aphid. The egg hatches and the larva begins eating the aphid alive.

    23. Harmful insects All insects that adversely affect human activities. Compete with crops for nutrients and water. Defoliates plants Transmits plant or animal diseases.

    24. Harmful insects Examples of harmful insects. (How is each harmful?) Stink Bugs Aphids Corn ear worm Potato weevil Boll weevil

    25. Livestock External parasites- insects living on the outside of an animal Flies, ticks, mites, fleas.

    26. Livestock Damage caused by insects Poor growth Weight loss Amemia Loss of hair and mange Presence of a crusty skin Even death

    27. IPM How does one control insects/kill them/eradicate them?

    28. IPM How does one control insects/kill them/eradicate them? Must break the life cycle some how Remove the environment needed to survive. Remove the food source.

    29. Apply Apply this information and come up with an IPM to control termites.
