  2. Working for the Lord “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Col 3:23-24 ESV

  3. State of Mind LazyNo Sense of Urgency Immature Need Reminders Lack Motivation Easily Distracted Talkative Day Dream Lack Self-Discipline

  4. Quotation “Sow a thought, reap an act  Sow an act, reap a habitSow a habit, reap a characterSow a character, reap a destiny” Ralph Waldo Emerson

  5. Vicious Cycle Poor Performance ILL-DISCIPLINED PERSON Inattentiveness LAZINESS UNPRODUCTIVE Tardiness Incomplete work

  6. Virtuous Cycle Successes DISCIPLINED PERSON Preparation PRODUCTIVE PROACTIVE Participation Steady Performance

  7. Illustrations on the cost of discipleship 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.  Lk 14:28-32 ESV

  8. Habit 1: Be Proactive • Opposite of reactive • Going bust and having an incomplete tower – becoming a laughing stock • Being defeated in battle – retreat or surrender in shame

  9. Habit 1: Be Proactive • Take ownership of life • Think and plan ahead (schedule) • Act and not be idle (follow through) • Work on improving knowledge, skill-sets or resources one is still lacking (growth mindset)

  10. Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind • What do I hope to do after each major exam? • What kind of job would I like to do? • Would I want to marry or stay single? • Where do I hope to stay? • How much would I need to retire comfortably? • What is God’s will for my life?

  11. Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind Best to align what we do with God’s will: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,and before you were born I consecrated you;I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Jer 1:5 ESV And he said,  “The God of our fathers appointed you to know his will, to see the Righteous One and to hear a voice from his mouth; for you will be a witness for him to everyone of what you have seen and heard.” Acts 22:14-15 ESV

  12. God’s General Will 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Th 5:16-18 ESV 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. 1 Pet 2:15-17 ESV

  13. God’s General Will 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 8 Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. 1 Th 4:3-8 ESV

  14. Habit 3: Put first things first Exams tomorrow Friend gets injured Late for school/work Project due today Computer/car crashed Planning, goal setting Project due in a week Exercise/reading Relationships (v/h) Health check Unimportant phone calls Interruptions Other people’s small woes Peer pressure Too many activities/hobbies Too much TV/social media Endless phone calls Excessive screen time Too much time on games Personal time wasters

  15. Habit 3: Put first things first 35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. 36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, 37 and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” 39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. Mk 1:35-39 ESV

  16. Applications High performers are ordinary people but somehow they are able to produce extra-ordinary results. • We have the power to cause positive outcomes. It starts with cultivating the right set of habits/disposition. • Who do I want to become? • Look at your weekly schedule; apart from work or study, what occupies your time?

  17. Habit 3: Put first things first
