Introduction • The Food Pyramid is made up of 6 parts which are: • Breads and Pastas • Fruits • Vegetables • Meat and Poultry • Dairy Products • Sweets and Fats
Dietary Guidelines • Eat a variety of foods • Balance the food you eat with physical activity • Choose a diet with plenty of grain products, vegetables and fruits • Choose a diet low in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol • Choose a diet moderate in sugars • Choose a diet moderate in salt and sodium
Levels on the Pyramid • Lowest level contains breads, cereals, rice and pasta. All of these are foods from grains. • Level with fruits and vegetables which comes mostly from plants. These give us vitamins, minerals, and fiber. • Level with dairy and meat comes mostly from animals. They are for protein, calcium, iron, and zinc.
6-11 Servings Examples could be: -1 slice of bread -1 cup of cereal -1/2 cup rice or pasta Breads and Pastas
2-4 Servings Examples could be: -1 medium banana, apple or orange -1/2 cup cooked or canned fruit -3/4 cup fruit juice Fruits
3-5 Servings Examples could be: -1 cup raw leafy vegs. -1/2 cup vegs. Cooked or raw -3/4 cup veg. juice Vegetables
2-3 Servings Examples could be: -1 cup of milk or yogurt -1.5 oz. of natural cheese -2 oz. or processed cheese Dairy
2-3 Servings Examples could be: -2-3 oz. of cooked lean meat, poultry, or fish -1/2 cup of cooked dry beans -2 tablespoons of peanut butter Meat and Poultry
Eat very little of these Examples would be: -Candy Bars -Cookies -Cakes Sweets and Fats
