  1. Learning Styles/ Teaching Styles/ Multiple Intelligences September 19, 2006

  2. Learning Styles • Define Learning? • How do you learn? • What do you think are the most effective methods of learning? • Why do some people learn more quickly than others? • Are people trapped by one or two specific styles of learning? • How do you meet the needs of the all the different learning styles?

  3. Learning Styles cont. • Research: • Visual Learners • Auditory Learners • Tactile/Kinesthetic

  4. Visual Learners • These learners need to see the teacher's body language and facial expression to fully understand the content of a lesson. They tend to prefer sitting at the front of the classroom to avoid visual obstructions (e.g. people's heads). They may think in pictures and learn best from visual displays including: diagrams, illustrated text books, overhead transparencies, videos, flipcharts and hand-outs. During a lecture or classroom discussion, visual learners often prefer to take detailed notes to absorb the information.

  5. Auditory Learners • They learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, talking things through and listening to what others have to say. Auditory learners interpret the underlying meanings of speech through listening to tone of voice, pitch, speed and other nuances. Written information may have little meaning until it is heard. These learners often benefit from reading text aloud and using a tape recorder.

  6. Tactile/ Kinesthetic Learners • Tactile/Kinesthetic persons learn best through a hands-on approach, actively exploring the physical world around them. They may find it hard to sit still for long periods and may become distracted by their need for activity and exploration.

  7. Multiple Intelligences • Multiple Intelligences are seven different ways to demonstrate intellectual ability. • Developed by Howard Gardner • Visual/Spatial Intelligence • Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence • Logical/Mathematical Intelligence • Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence • Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence • Interpersonal Intelligence • Intrapersonal Intelligence

  8. Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence • Student research and demo

  9. Visual/Spatial Intelligence • Student research and demo

  10. Logical/Mathematical Intelligence • Student research and demo

  11. Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence • Student research and demo

  12. Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence • Student research and demo

  13. Interpersonal Intelligence • Student research and demo

  14. Intrapersonal Intelligence • Student research and demo

  15. Teaching Styles • Who is your most memorable teacher? Why? • What do you think are the most effective teaching styles? • Can you define 3 categories of teaching styles? • Direct • Modules • Non-linear (self pace)

  16. Teaching Styles cont. • Key components of the different styles of teaching? • What do you think? • Modeling, creative, clear, motivating, innovative, encouraging (supportive), challenging, outcome oriented, transformative, inviting, reflective, and democratic.

  17. “What does good teaching look like?” • Teacher… • Knows content • Objective based • Expects more (focus on growth) • Engaging Environment • High trust in students • Use assessment/ evaluation • “Good teachers create a learning environment where they are passionate about discovery.” • Question based

  18. Other ideas re: good teaching: • Attitude is essential (don’t fill buckets, light fires) • Get them to think and talk outside of class • Expect a lot = get a lot • Don’t cover information, uncover it. • “God will not force us to become something we do not want to work to become.”

  19. Final Thought • DC 58 • 27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness; • 28 For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.
