ARTH 200 Assignment 2 • You should identify and provide brief photocopied or printed information from the following sources: • Week one • encyclopedias and/or dictionaries (choose 2) • books and/or exhibition catalogues (choose 2) • websites (choose 1). • Week two • periodical databases or indexes (choose 2) • For the data base searches provide print-outs showing the ten most promising references you found and print out search history • journal articles (choose 3, based on your database searches)
Assignment 2: Preparing to search • If your artwork is well known you will be able to find information directly about the work. • If it is less well known you will be able to find related information that helps you to make sense of the artwork , For example: • information on other works by the same artist • information on art from the same art-historical period or style • information on the technical processes used to make the artwork • information on the subject matter represented within the artwork • information on social or historical context, etc.
Tips for Researching • Get an overview of your research topic by reading encyclopedia articles • Identify important concepts relevant to your research and prepare keywords • Check the bibliographies of relevant documents to identify other documents that you can search for. (Note: To use online sources from home you need a Library PIN)

Preparing keywords for search • Start with specific keywords: artist’s name if available and main words relevant to title : • alexander severus and sculpture • If you don’t find enough publications, broaden your search by genre, geography, time period, or other aspects • roman and sculpture • roman and art • art and sculpture • You may have to try a number of different combinations
Encyclopedias and/or Dictionaries • Use Encyclopedias and/or Dictionaries to: • get an overview of topic • find definitions for terms • identify most important points about topic and possible ways of focusing your papers • use bibliographies at ends of encyclopedia articles to identify some core works and researchers in field
Finding Encyclopedias/Dictionaries in Library • Use the Art History Subject Guide on the library web site • Use CLUES to identify other encyclopedias • Keyword search: • sculpture encyclopedia • roman encyclopedia • roman history encyclopedia Paper encyclopedias are kept in the Reference Collection – Webster Library 2nd floor
Finding Books & Exhibition Catalogues • Finding Books • Library Catalogues: CLUES & Other library catalogues • Check bibliographies of encyclopedias or other relevant documents • Use KEYWORD and/or SUBJECT Headings • Use relevant Subject Headings to: • focus your search or • identify more general concepts relevant to your research • Finding Exhibition Catalogues • Use KEYWORD search (include the term exhibitions) • painting and exhibitions
Google Books • Helpful for finding very precise terms in books • Useful for finding relevant chapters in books • Usually provides only parts of a book ….. • Useful for finding the table of contents of a book • Use ADVANCED search • Check CLUES to find out if the book is available at Concordia Library
Using Other Libraries • Check Other Libraries in Montreal • Get a CREPUQ card at the Circulation Desk to borrow from other Quebec university libraries • Use the Interlibrary Loans service to request books, etc. from libraries in Montreal or elsewhere
