Trades math – basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and percentages).
Basic construction skills – exposure to blue print reading, use of construction tools such as tape measure, safe use of power tools, as well as safety training, first aid, and forklift operation.
Soft skills – attendance, punctuality, working as a team, initiative, communicating effectively, following instructions.
Introduction to the different trades and an opportunity to meet some of the apprenticeship coordinators who are responsible for organizing the interview process.

75% completion rate
Average placement wage in 2003 was $13.71/hr
Average placement wage in 2004 is $16.21/hr
One year retention rate is low; approximately 40%

Major public works project -- will utilize apprentices mainly from cement masons, ironworkers, carpenters, operating engineers, laborers, and electrical workers.
Project Labor Agreement (PLA) includes language around apprenticeship utilization goals and minority and women hiring goals.
Direct Entry access for apprentices to enter unions.

Low income, low skilled adults living in the Rainier Valley who are facing issues such as:
-- limited or no work history
-- drug and alcohol issues
-- criminal backgrounds
-- significant personal debt or back child support payments
-- homelessness
-- lack of a driver’s license
-- Limited English Proficiency

Community based agencies will provide case management, assessment, support services, assist with placement and provide retention.
Residents will be assessed and directed either to pre-apprenticeship training or be referred directly to apprenticeship openings or other construction related job openings.
Non apprenticeship employment: heavy equipment operation, truck operation, forklift operation, manufacturing of construction materials, CNC operation, maritime construction, construction repair, and rehab of a structure or building.

Seeking entrance into apprenticeship requires a lot of diligence on the part of the participant
Once a participant is in an apprenticeship program, there may be breaks in between jobs (sitting on the bench)
Participants who want to join the union must be motivated (course study), establish some stability in their lives around transportation and child care, and learn to manage their finances for the down time.
