Strengthening communities with living wage jobs 330 6th Avenue North, Suite 301, Seattle, WA 98109 (206) 628-6975 www.seattlejobsinitiative.com 3 Seattle Vocational Institute - Seattle Jobs InitiativePre-Apprenticeship Program Labor market data showed good wages, growth in sector (several major public works projects on the horizon) Total of 9 classes 2003 and 2004 Approximately 15 trainees per class Twenty-two weeks long Tuesday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:00pm Drug test prior to training Case management provided by community agencies Seattle Vocational Institute offers hard skills training & links to unions SJI provides wrap-around services with case management support

Basic construction skills – exposure to blue print reading, use of construction tools such as tape measure, safe use of power tools, as well as safety training, first aid, and forklift operation. Soft skills – attendance, punctuality, working as a team, initiative, communicating effectively, following instructions. Introduction to the different trades and an opportunity to meet some of the apprenticeship coordinators who are responsible for organizing the interview process.

Project Labor Agreement (PLA) includes language around apprenticeship utilization goals and minority and women hiring goals. Direct Entry access for apprentices to enter unions.

Residents will be assessed and directed either to pre-apprenticeship training or be referred directly to apprenticeship openings or other construction related job openings. Non apprenticeship employment: heavy equipment operation, truck operation, forklift operation, manufacturing of construction materials, CNC operation, maritime construction, construction repair, and rehab of a structure or building.

Strengthening communities with living wage jobs 330 6th Avenue North, Suite 301, Seattle, WA 98109 (206) 628-6975 www.seattlejobsinitiative.com 12 Challenges Openings for apprentices are based on need of each individual union Seeking entrance into apprenticeship requires a lot of diligence on the part of the participant Once a participant is in an apprenticeship program, there may be breaks in between jobs (sitting on the bench) Participants who want to join the union must be motivated (course study), establish some stability in their lives around transportation and child care, and learn to manage their finances for the down time.
